Default Airflo vest and backpack fly inserts

I have this vest, but i have started filling up the fly inserts and have noticed that the inserts aren't slotted.

Does anybody know if there are replacements for the inserts that are slotted ?

I much prefer the slotted foam for flies, i think they last much longer.

Thanks

I assumed you just used them for a selection of flies you were using that day rather than for the contents of your fly box?

Ahh, i understand. but that would make it kinda messy for me.
It would save time, but it would just mean doing it later.

I prefer to put the fly back in the box/place where i took it from to save me looking all over the place for it.

Dilemma innit? I haven't got one btw, thought about it, but wasn't sure what I'd actually do with the "built in" fly boxes. As you say, on one hand nice to just dump all your flys in permanently (in which case I agree, slotted foam much better, at least for nymphs) but on other hand I do other sorts of fly fishing so wouldn't always want the foam filled up with my little river flies/nymphs. Came to conclusion I was better off sticking with current arrangement of small backpack over vest, with boxes in my vest pocket to suit occasion.

My idea was, fill them up with a set and then having spares. So i could just pull them out and change when i need to. Or pull them out and put fly boxes in if i want different flies.

I think it was a smart idea having the built in boxes, but its a bit strange they attached them to Velcro to be removable but didn't allow for some slotted foam versions.

Also does anybody have a clue what the 2 clips on some stretchy rope are for ? they are loose and I got them inside the bag. But im a little puzzles as to what they are meant to be for :/

Cheers

I dont have the vest ( paying for it would help ) but i would think that the drop down fly inserts are best used for flies that have been used - the equivalent of a sheeps patch ?

Hi Denzil, I use the fly inserts to keep the flies I've just used. Before buying this vest, I used a sheepskin patch but because I de-barb, I inevitably lose flies. These inserts do minimise flies lost for me.

I've not seen slotted inserts but Kieron may know if they plan on doing slotted ones??

He's on the forum, why not ask him?

Best regards

Stuart

I have a fishpond chest pack which has a central fly bench. I use this for flies that I will be fishing with, and also stow fly boxes in another compartment on the pack. For flies that have had a swim, I use an Orvis ripple foam patch attached to the front of the chest pack via a clip & velcro strips. This works well as the used flies then get the opportunity to dry off naturally through exposure to the air. Funnily enough, I've lost a couple of barbed flies but no barbless thus far; I guess the barbless flies tend to go in to the ripple foam further and appear to be more secure.

The fly bench is thus far standing up well to swapping a set of small stillwater flies with river/ chalkstream flies based on where/ what I'm fishing. But I know I'll need to source replacement inserts, as inserting/ removing/ re-inserting barbed flies will degrade the insert over time.

What a fantastic sport this is! :-)

Thanks guys.

I will keep looking for other inserts for it but,
I may just remove the inserts and use them as more storage space for fly boxes.

Thanks for all of your help.
