Aye some of our guys are up pretty regularly to the Dee but i think you need to be a bit more specific as to where on the Dee to get any relevant advice. Even then in the upper reaches water conditions may dictate the use of a single handed rod when only two days previously a doublehander would have been the order of the day.

The ideal time and place to use a 13' #7 rod with a floating Spey line. No multi tips, polyleaders or any of that malarkey. Overhead casts stealthily performed - if not aś fait with the various Spey casts - will pay dividends.

The responses to my query have been very helpful. I am amazed at the generosity of folk like Andy Wren on the thread, and others who pm-ed me, offering me loans of tackle. Thank you all very much. Now the next thing I will need to understand is the rule about flies...

The rule says "Fly only, no trebles, barbless or crimped." That is surely ambiguous and I will be clarifying it. Surely they mean: Barbless or crimped barb flies only and NO TREBLES...?

you are correct in your understanding... "Surely they mean: Barbless or crimped barb flies only and NO TREBLES.."

I would take a selection of low water doubles and tubes in addition to your standards.

Thank you. What hooks would you use on the tubes?

If you already know this fine but....salmon lines aren't the same as trout lines they are very much heavier for a given weight. We had another lad along last week with a 12ft 8 weight rod and an 8 weight trout line and wondered why it wouldn't cast.

I only ever use Loop tube doubles - shorter in the shank than their fly hook - they are very strong so you will need stout forceps to flatten the barbs . I use #2, 4 and 6 foror salmon and sea trout tubes. But unless there is a spate, you shouldn't need that many tubes in June.

I last paid £6 per pack, they appear to have gone up considerably since then. Sorry, but they really are good.

Hey Richard,

Being such a trout traditionalist, you should think about a bamboo spey!
They are making a big comeback, especially in the US, and there are a few makers like Bob Clay on the Kispiox with a long waiting list to cast and own one of his spliced ferruled rods. There rods are actually quite fast, and quite reasoably light compared to modern grapite spey rods, around 10oz or so. The older ones may be a different story though!

Cheers,
Steve
