Default Starter kit

Hi all, I'm new to fly fishing but have free access to a good stretch of the river Usk. Have decided to get a bit of kit for trout but dont want to spend silly money (circa £300 reel and rod) any ideas, seems to be a vast selection out there, should I look at second hand kit? Have left money aside for some lessons aswell. Happy to get basic then perhaps build as I (if) improve!

Welcome Keeper,
£300 is plenty for rod and reel but to enjoy river fishing you'll really need a pair of waders and a scoop net. Plenty of advice on here on methods and patterns once you are kitted out.

If you have free access to The Usk you'll have a few 'new best friends' happy to show you the ropes.

Tight lines!

SharkeyP

Re the kit, have a look at the loop xact kit, weight 5. All parts, - the reel, rod and line, - are good. I have one in weight 6, it works well for me.

You're doing it ar$e about face - go to your qualified instructor first and be advised by him/her on what gear will best suit your style - that's what they are good at and why you're paying 'em No point in buying kit first and then finding that it won't suit you or the water you'll be fishing Your 300 quid will get you some really good stuff.
