Default Why?

Why do folk have to be buying tackle all the time? Why not simply get good quality stuff that will last you a lifetime and leave it at that? Is there any need to buy another rod or reel for doing the same type of fishing that you do now? Buying consummables all the time makes perfect sense but capital items like rods, reels, landing nets and tackle bags should not need duplication, surely?

For some its as fun as fishing itself.

Why not buy and sell tackle.

I think people buy for varios reasons: fashion, keeping up with the jones' and the constant development of new rods, reels, lines etc...

I would not want to be using a rod I purchased 10 years ago when there is a better one available.

I'll be more than happy if my present rod and reels last 10 years plus. In fact, I have a rod and reel that's over 20 year old, rod and reel still being made today.
Good advertising by manufacturers!

'Better' in terms of fly fishing, does this mean less fish were caught 10 years ago?

It's marketing, chiefly.

It's all about backups. Unless we continually replace the other twenty rods we have backing up our favourites, we're not fulfilled. Some might climb the ladder and then again many will not. Creating a need, a want, to have them replaced.

Seriously, I enjoy buying new stuff and treating myself. All within my means of course. I don't have an addiction. Unlike some.

Also, not everyone can afford £400 (example) rods and reels upfront.

So, they may be able to afford a £100 rod or reel every 2-3yrs and then replace it by selling and buying another.

Others may enjoy buying a second hand rod to play around and test it and then sell it on again 6 months later.

A major consideration, however, is that if everyone simply bought one outfit, as suggested, then tackle manufacturers would barely be able to exist!

Say there are 100,000 fly fisherman and each one only bought one rod and one reel every 10-20yrs. Well, on one hand, they could barely survive on that type of turnover or, if they wanted to, they would have to charge huge amounts of money to make it worth their while.

Or there would be less of them.
