Default Survey: which rod length and line size one recommend to use for bank size reservoir fishing,

using mostly weighted medium sized streamers, target fish medium to big size rainbow trout, and distance casting can be a critical factor to get to the fish.

Reservoir bank fishing, chucking out lures? Content with a #7 or #8 line and 9ft 6 rod. Will use a 9ft or 10ft rod but it depends on the weather conditions and the number of flies on my leader.

The general opinion over the years is a 9'6" for a 7wt line..perfect reservoir bank rod. Don't think you'd go far wrong with a 10' rod in a 7 or 8, or indeed a 9'6" in an 8.

At the end of the day you can't fish with two rods in two different line weights at the same time so a decision has to be made. The way I look at it is, you can always feather an 8wt to land softly in a gentle ripple, but you can't make a 7wt denser to cope with wind. My opinion.

9ft6 or 10ft 9 weight would be my choice for heavy lures on a reservoir. A line size either way wouldn't bother me at all. Both Steve Parton and Mike Marshall do cracking rods for this kind of work.

I read here 9ft6 to 10 ft rods.
Neverthless I know that a 9ft rod is a good length for a fly rod.
You will not cast further with longer rods.
Why then the advice of longer rods in these conditions?

Depends on so many things really but don't forget "enjoyment" as a a major factor.

Personally, I find anything longer/heavier than 9'6" #7 to be too hard work.

I use 9.6ft 7# for big ressie work and in very windy conditions, all other times on medium still water and with some wind I use 9ft 6#. Small still waters and if only gentle breeze or very still 9ft 5#. A lot also depends on the type of rod, fast action etc. Also what fly line, ie manufacturer.

Fulling Mill Gold 10ft 6wt (but handles a 7wt line with ease), if you are fighting a wind and chucking out big lures but otherwise i like my 9ft 3wt, lots more fun.

10 ft #8 for me...........I sometimes go down to a 9ft 6ins #7 or even #6 if the flys are smaller and the trout are a bit closer...........birdsnest
