Default Need advice on fly choice please

Hi Guys and Gals,

I am going fishing/camping up north of Scotland 2nd week in April and i need some help with fly choice, i dont yet tie so i will be purchasing these flies so cant just take materials and try and match the hatch if any hatch at all, is mid April still going to be too early for any decent fly life?

Any suggestions to which flies may be best at this time of year would be gratefully appreciated

Cheers

I fish in the Outer Hebrides every April and the water is still a bit too cold. You get a small window around lunch time that can be productive, and that's as good as it gets. Flies that work well for me are Peter Ross, Kate Mclaren and GRHE nymph and Hare's Ear Emergers.
Enjoy your trip.

Cheers Diarmid.

never take brownies from the river anyway so anything caught will be carefully released to grow bigger and stronger

Cheers Diarmid,

Its the river orchy that i will be fishing, i also take a spinning rod (there, i said it lol ) and fish the worm or wee spinner in the deeper pools, really just a camping trip to be honest for the lads with a wee bit of fishing thrown in, lol, where would you recommend buying the flies from and what sizes would be best do you think?

The Orchy is a salmon river - and not the cheapest either so be careful about permits!

You might be lucky with the weather as it's not too far north but as you'll know April can be freezing. I'd be tempted to rely on well sunk wets but even in April you can get rises around mid day on many rivers; the Large dark olives and/or march browns particularly may be active.

You won't be far from Loch Awe which can fish well early season so might be worth checking out.
