Default Rio Versitip Line - Views?

Has anyone tried the Rio Versitip line based on the newish Clouser taper? This is for the single handed rod. If so how did it cast and is the floating line ok in cold water?

Thanks

Hi I been using this line for the last 4yrs, for all my swff. I use it on my 6 7 and 8wt crosscurrents. It loads the rods lovely and the sink tips are so easy to cast. I do a lot of surface fishing at the needles and it float great, even use it for carp fishing with floaters. So far it shows no sign of ware. It was recommended to me when I was fishing for stripped bass in the states. For me its my number one saltwater line

Interesting. Any of the sink-tip hinging you hear about on the heavier tips?

No I've never had that problem with this line, the tips are only 15ft long and the joint is so tight between both lines. When using shooting heads I used to get this problem but that was with 30ft and especially with my 35ft heads.

I thought the versi tip was based on the Windcutter taper, has it changed?

I've been using this in a 8wt for the last few years for quite a bit of my SWFF. The ability to change tip densities is very useful (particualrly when fishing across rapid tide changes when water goes from racing to slack very quickly). However I find it is very sensitive to the amount head outside the rod tip, much more so than the Outbounds I have in the same weight and cast with the same rods. No real issue with hinging.
To be quite honest I woudn't really recommend it over a good floater and a selection of different density salmon tips.

Cheers

Andy

The trouble with the Outbounds is the weight, there designed to load the rod with one cast, The only time I use these lines it when i'm fishing for pike the heaver line weight makes casting big flies a lot easier. The 8wt Outbound is considerably heaver than the 8wt Versitip, this is why they cast so easy.

Here's a thought

RIO GOLD 8wt is 359 grams
RIO CLOUSER 8wt is 231 grams
RIO VERSITIP 8wt is 260 grams
RIO OUTBOUND 8wt is 330 grams

The Gold is a trout line, I thought it would be the lightest line here.

Interesting and makes a lot of sense having cast both Outbound and Versitip lines, however I think that there is something more about the Versitips characteristics that makes it difficult to aerielise enough line to load the rod properly, my castings not to shabby and I struggle to get a consistent cast out of the Versitip. I might get it out and have a bit of a play tomorrow, maybe try it on a 7wt to see if it is a rod loading thing.

Cheers

Andy
