Default Atomsix 9ft 5wt Tachyon @ West House trout Lakes

Originally Steve sent me a 9ft 5wt Tachyon to review, I tried it and felt it did not feel like a 5wt, and it needed a Rio Grand to make it sing. All my 5wt lines really needed a lot of line in the air to make it feel right and it did nothing at close range. For distance casting it was excellent but for me it did not hit the spot as a real world fast actioned fishing rod like the 10ft 7wt and the 9ft 6wt Tachyon did.

Steve orginally sent me a Pac bay 9ft 5wt to try out and it was really an excellent fishing rod, it had everything, it was light and really shot a Snowbee xs 5wt line out with ease. I said to Steve if only it was 5% stiffer it was that close to being perfect for me.

On Friday I visited West House trout lakes with the sole purpose of giving the revised 9ft 5wt Atomsix Tachyon a good 4hr test.

It was cold and there had been a good frost the night before and when I pulled up at the car park the vans outside temp showed 3oc but the sun was shining early on and there was very little wind.

There was hardly any surface activity and knew I would have to fish sub surface. But as I would use the Tachyon as a stillwater dry fly rod I simply put a size 16 dry fly on to try it out and see if I could bring a fish to the surface. I spent 20 mins fishing like this and with a Snowbee xs it casted beautifully at close range but quite suprisingly was able to push a line out to really long distances with ease.

Normally I find a trade off between a rod thats good close in and one that can cast a good distance, but in this case it could do both amazingly well.

Nothing touched the dry fly so I knew a buzzer suspended below an indicator would likely net me a fish. So I put a buzzer 2ft below an indicator. I dont like fishing indicators on 5wt rods as I feel they run out of steam when pushing for distance and a 6wt or 7wt is better for me when using these tactics.

I have never used a 5wt rod that could do what Steve's Tachyon did it fished a dry perfectly and also blasted out a size 10 buzzer under and indicator a long way. I was pretty shocked how good it was and how much better it was than the Pac bay as I thought that was pretty good already. The 9ft 5wt Tachyon eclipsed the Pac Bay by some margin as well as my G-tec and my other 5wt rods.

It was a joy to cast, no tip bounce and if you have cast Steve's 9ft 6wt Tachyon you know how good it is, well the 5wt is every bit as good. The 5wt is simply a carbon copy in 5wt format. Steve's fit and finish is always fantastic as is his customer service.

This Tachyon is as good as it gets when it comes to 5wts, so good in fact its staying with me. This rod is to good to part with, there is no better recomendation than spending your own hard earned and this rod is that good. It worked perfectly with the Snowbee xs at all distances so in my view is a real world 5wt and does not need a .25 or .5 heavier line to make it work.

I had an excellent time at West House 8 fish came into the buzzer in the 3.5hrs I fished with it, the fish were hard fighting and in good condition and the Tachyon handled them perfectly. The fishing was great the people friendly, what more could you ask for. Go along and give it a go. i will be again without doubt.

Well done Steve on making the 5wt as good as the 6wt and 7wt not often does one range have 3 amazing rods in 3 different line weight.

Plenty of 5wts for you to try but the Atomsix is the peach of the bunch.
