Default Orvis Western 3 or Sharpes Gordon 2 ?

Hi. Am looking for a 9 foot 6 #6 outfit to use on small stillwaters. Was going to push the boat out and go for a Hardy Uniqua but, having read it being described by one forum member as a £30 rod, have been put off somewhat ! A lot of good people on here say you can get much more rod for less money than Hardy charge. I have kinda decided on either the Orvis Western 3 or the Sharpes Gordon 2. Any advice, guidance or recommendations gratefully accepted. Thanks folks.......

Having tried the Gordon 2 9foot 6in #7 a few times, (as a second rod) i couldn't get to like it, at all, however others may love them *shrug* never used an Orvis.

A rod (in my humble opinion) is a personal choice, you may hate what i like and vice versa, i settled on a 9ft #6 Sage Vantage, as a second rod, (they only go up to 9 foot), but i feel it's more than adequate for small stillwaters.

My advice is don't rush in take your time looking around. You should be able to pick up a bargain, whatever rod you choose, as the season is virtually over, and try before you buy, nothing worse than buying a rod that performs like a cricket bat.

Best regards
Jim

I have the Sharpes Gordon 2 10ft #6 and it suits me perfectly for small stillwaters - usually fishing with a light team of wets.

I did waggle the Western 3 equivalent in the Orvis shop but not enough to give you (or me really) any worthwhile indicators.

Ultimately the Sharpes was going for a very nice price so I popped for it blind and don't regret it at all - an easy rod to get along with, at least for my casting style, and very well finished. Perhaps not the lightest 10ft #6 out there but a hugely 'fishable' rod. The Gordon 2 is currently around £130 new (including shipping) from a reputable seller on eBay, which is what I paid for mine, and something of a bargain for a rod of this quality IMHO.

Nothing wrong with the Hardy Uniqua. Great performance and a finish which is much better than the Orvis and Sharpes. Love these Hardy's

Eentually got the Hardy at a great price (with free reel) from Gary Evans on line. And love it. So much so. I bought the 10 foot #7 as well !
