Default Tippet Material

Hi all, just looking for a bit of advice.

I currently have a mis mash of different brand/type tippet materials stuffed into a pocket of my fly vest. There is flourocarbon and mono from about 4 different brands.

i'm looking to streamline everything and buy one type and one brand, I might even push the boat out and get a tippet holder and clip it to me vest

I think I just want mono rather than flourocarbon but just want some suggestion of brands. I've heard that Stroft is good stuff but looks quite expensive considering I'd want to buy a good range of breaking strains. drennen sub surface looks like good VFM - does anyone have any experience of this?

Will I still be able to fish dries with 'sub surface' material? I want an allrounder so I can fish nymphs, dries, spiders etc...

Any help greatly appreciated.

Cheers, Rob.

Hi Rob,
I've tried them all at one time or another. Riverge, Orvis, you name it and I've spent up to £18.99 for a spool of the stuff. Now I use only Tornado Tournment coarse-fishing line. It is brilliant stuff, very thin for its breaking strain, and knots well. As a bonus, it is only £7.50 for 200 metres. Check out the spec at buygoodtackle.com.
Cheers,
Angus

I like the reflo power line as well, had some left over from my coarse fishing days and it ticks a lot of boxes for fly fishing as well!.Another old favourite from my coarse fishing days is Bayer Perlon which has been used alot by Oliver Edwards of the famed dvd series.Very good stuff but it does have a brown tinge to it whereas the powerline is clear.

I am similar in that after trying all the pricey advertised fly fishing tippets, have eventually settled on Ultima PowerMatch, does everything the fly tippets does but at half the price and are reliable.

i am more or less in the same boat as robbiejam is, over the years i have tried all sorts of line, i am currently using mostly rio powerflex but i also have accumulated loads of spools of most of the other well known stuff, and to be honest i have got to the stage of confusing myself as to which one to use.
i wouldn't mind but i am fly-fishing 30 years!

i do think that a lot of the 'big brand' named lines are way overpriced and a bit of a con to be honest.

I too would like to settle on a line that i can use all the time without having to take out a mortgage to buy some.
i will check out one or two of the above ones as they do not seem badly priced at all.

i will be watching this thread with interest.

Maxima green or clear, depending on the water clarity, except for 2lb strength for #2/3 wt rods when I use Perlon (Maxima only go down to 2lb in Chameleon, which is brown and of no use where I fish - maybe peaty streams in Scotland).

sub surface Drennan for me and Maxima Cameleon for highland/peat stained water and in "rope thickness" for Salmon . Last season i experimented with maxima cameloen in 2lb for the river which is not that peaty....no issues.
I like its stiffness............and price!!!

We were dicussing only last week the amount of wee broons that take a large Salmon fly on 18lb maxima cameleon when targeting Salmon.
I just dont get this flourocarbon and co polywhaterver have tried it and i swear it sticks out a mile.....possibly just me
