Default What weight line for a 7' 8" Split Cane Rod ??

I have a 7' 8" Harding Split Cane Rod, what weight line would be ideal for this for river dry fly work.

I currently have a a 5 weight DT on my reel, would this be too heavy, could it damage the rod or just making casting more difficult.

Do i need to buy a line, if so which one, will be passing sportfish on my way for a week on the Welsh Wye in a few weeks if i need to get a new one. I was planning to just pop in, show them the rod and ask their opinion but thought i would ask you guys first.

I don't know the rod but I have a similar length cane rod that works best with a #5 line. Try yours out on the lawn with a bit of wool on instead of a fly...

Default Right line

Nick,
If you are going to Winforton they have a rackfull of loaded reels for rod testing and a casting pool through the door.
Try all possible lines concentrating on the distance you want to cast. Do not judge it on out and out distance. That is not what a short cane rod is made for.
Best of luck. Afterwards there is a super coffee shop in the village. Enjoy.

Nick
You may or may not be aware that I make fly lines and am based in Epsom. You are welcome to come over one day and try some lines through the Hardy ?

Sorry...I meant to ask...has the rod been out in the rain recently ? If it has been dry for a long time the action may well be faster than it should be.

Mick,

Interesting, the rod has been in a rod tube for about 15 years, last used when i was a youngster and managed to break the tip while not concentrating walking along. Was mended straight away (at great expense!) but not used since.

Just remembered the other day and suggested to my Dad that we try using it in a few weeks when we are away.

Many thanks for the invite, i will certainly take you up on that at some point, Bloke rods here i come !!!

Tell us about your fly lines please. Do you make WF floating lines in drab mahogany brown?

Take it out of the tube immediately! Hang it up in its own softly tied cloth bag with the heavy ends downwards. Cane rods should not be stored in tubes. They need hanging up.
