Default New Olympus waterproof camera

I thought some of you might be interestd to know that Olympus have brought out the MJU 720SW waterproof and shockproof camera.

It is 7.2mpx, very fast starting up and can be operated at depths up to 3 metres. It is only 95x60x20mm, weighs 125 grams and is very handy for slipping into a fishing vest pocket or left dangling from a shoulder strap.

The LCD viewing screen is 61mm.
I've just tested it out fishing the Suir and Aherlow without reading the manual. Excellent results despite my ignorance of the different modes available. It has underwater wide and macro modes.
It has 19mb onboard memory and takes the XD card.

Retailing at around £218 at Dixons. Specifications below:

NOT the Canon Ixus II

Obviously I had waded deeper than I had realised at some point in the evening. So, just a word of caution; when the fishing is so good that you are transported to that magical other place that all we anglers seek - make sure your digitalia is in a waterproof pocket.

BTW - anyone know if this stuff can be rescued/repaired?

Pentax Optio WP. I think this is the only other one on the market (other than specialist/professional camaras).

My wife bought the new Pentax Optio W10 for a sea kayaking trip around St Kilda. It's 6 Megapixels, 3x Zoom and has a 2.5 inch LCD. The onboard memory is tiny and she had to buy a card for it. I think she paid around £160 for it, and from the pictures she's taken i reckon it's a good buy.

Cheers Calum

The Pentax is pretty good too and perfectly adequate for fishing photos.
The main differences are that the Pentax is 5mpx and the Olympus 7.2mpx, the Olympus is stated to operate at 3 metres underwater, with the Pentax at 1.5 metres. The Olympus has a 2.5" LCD screen whilst the Pentax uses a 2" screen.

I wanted a camera with 6 or more mpx so that I can print out photos on A3 paper without too much pixilation.

Sorry Hambo, but you're wrong there. The Pentax is 6 megapixels and it is a 2.5 inch screen.
