Default twisted tippet/leader with Streamflex 6'6"

Hi All

I recently purchased a Greys Streamflex 6'6" from a fellow forum member - it's a superb rod (in superb condition), I bought a Greys G series reel to go with it.

I wanted something a little better (Orvis) but the budget wouldn't stand it. As it is I'm really pleased with the Greys reel - for 30 quid I don't think I can complain at all!

Both rod and reel got their first outing last night. The derwent (Durham) isn't the smallest river in the world, but there is something about using a small rod that I couldn't resist.

One thing I noticed after using the Streamflex is my leader/tippet became twisted quite quickly.

By twisted I don't mean pig tail twisted, more how you'd twist a dubbing loop with tying thread.

It pulls out quite easy, but after a cast or two it's back again.

I'm sure it's something to do with the way I am casting. My usual weapon is a Hardy Demon 9' 5# - I'm not sure how I should adjust my casting style to suit the new Greys rod.

Can anyone tell me if twisted tippets is a symptom of a casting error, something that 'just happens' in moving water or something else all together?

Thanks!

S

Steven, I don't know much about the physics of casting but were you using a big bushy fly, like a Sedge or Mayfly type?

They will give you line twist quicker than you can say "knife"

Hi Roy

Yep, a home tied Adams - that's home tied with a hackle that is a little too big.

What should I do in these circumstances? Should I expect to change the tippet material more often than I normally would?

Having said that, with the huge variety of bank side vegetation I kept leaving flies in changing the tippet was a fairly regular occurrence anyway!

for the price of mrtrouts furled leaders get the two different lengths 3ft and 5ft then you will have one for larger rivers/streams aswell

God i will put you out your misery.
Your tippet diameter is too small.
Flies that tend to helicopter (even tiny Griffiths nats) need a larger tippet.
So if you were using 7 X, try 6 then 5......
Its got SFA to do with the rod.

If I may add to this that increased line speed makes it even worse. Looks like heavier tippet and a little less casting speed might help. Then if you are using a small rod on big water and pushing it you will increase line speed and that might have played a role. Right tool for the right job always helps.

I hope this is useful.

Bobby

thats quite funny and simple as it always is, griffiths knats are the worst twisters, just upping the diameter of the tippet stops it.
