After feeling pretty ashamed of my last pictorial efforts I have invested at modest cost in a pocketable digital camera which also claims to be waterproof,,,
Decided I would have an afternoon on the Rye yesterday , Arrived on the bank to find bright sunny conditions and the mayfly hatch still going strong . By the time I had tackled up the car was nicely speckled with mayflies which were mainly duns
The river was clear and the sun was bright the main activity was in the deeper sheltered runs under the trees . Fish were risng and mainly seemed to mopping up the spent mayflies that were forming little rafts in the eddies
Second cast in under the trees and a nice brownie came to the net .
As the afternoon went on into evening time the hatch got heavier and the fish were rising well the larger and fewer stocked fish were in the deeper pools and the smaller and prettier natives were in the fast runs and glides ..
I finished the day with around 12 fish , It could have been more the hatch was fantastic probably the heaviest mayfly hatch I have seen in many years .
When I was preparing to leave the air was full of spinners , A truly memorable day. In amongst the mayflies were LDOs and even some grannon . Cant beleive how after this hard winter and cold spring the Mayly are early this year . Up norf around here the mayflies dont usually arrive till the second week in June ...
Dont they look great just a pity my poxy artificial doesnt look as good , but the fish dont seem to mind. I consider my Fly tying to be utilitarion rather than pretty ....
Before I left the sky was full of spinners never seen so many for years, A great site just a shame I dont know how to post a video clip on here,,
