Default Shocking: How to Ruin a Perfectly Decent Cane Rod

I'm getting a 7' 4-pce cane made and the spec is all in: Cattenach Sir D taper, flamed, everything blued, matte finish.

I was thining of getting fuji rings put on..

Ahem.

Noooooooooo!

Apart from looking like an abomination from Ron Clay's arsenal, is there a need for lined on a short casting small stream rod?

I sure Gary would have some strong words to say about such a horror with his name on it!!

Cheers

M,

is this one of those; by the time you get it, FREE RODS? Like Steve said; DON'T Spoil it! It should be a thing of natural beauty!

My rod is based on one of Wayne Cattanach Tapers!

Go for it. Nobody is cooking bones anymore to glue the cane rod together and in every other aspect of cane rod building, modern materials are used, so why not... And you ca always change them if you do not like them...

4-pce: So it fits in my back-pack. I've never owned a car so the rod needs to be able to travel in a motorbike backpack without me worrying about it flying all over the place (as is the case with my 8' 3-pce).

I've road tested a 4-pce and it was fantastic (on the river - I got a lift down, so no bakcpakc action). There is also a thought that the critical parts of a taper are bypassed by a four piece and not by a three piece.

As to fujis, I love the idea of creating an object of beauty out of function. I already use a Backwinder on my current cane rod which is a little outlandish for some people. I like the idea of using cane purely for its advanced function, not for the kick I get from holding the apotheosis of fly fishing craftsmanship.

Eh? What does that mean in plain Latin?
What is the advanced function of cane? I thought it was its ability to cast very short lines without much line out, which means that putting lined guides is without function - there certainly is no shooting problem with snakes and silk. I wonder how many re-ringing jobs Gary gets for his rods? The increased weight (though slight) is also likely to have a negative effect on the action of the rod, especially when it already has (three, count them) nickel silver/bronze ferrules.

So he should get a rod with short glued bamboo ferrules and he will even save weight
