Default Cane Rods & What Reel for Streams?

I really enjoy fly fishing; and nothing gives me greater pleasure than when I'm fishing on a small stream for wild brown trout! But, what about the fishing tackle we use when fishing in small rivers or streams, with overgrown foliage either side of us, tree roots and rocks underfoot and branches overhead!

Well, all through last season, I chose to use a 7ft,#2/3,weight Greys GRXi with a BBSII Reel and an SA, Mastery #3,weight DT Line! This season I've bought myself a New 6ft.3in, #3, weight Cane Rod although I'll still be using my BBSII Reel, but with a DT#3,weight Silk Line!

What type of tackle do do you use when fishing on small streams and rivers?

Have any of you considered trying the new to the UK, Tenkara style of fishing on our small streams?

I'm so looking forward to using my new cane rod and silk line! Would be interesting to hear what your using during the the coming new trout season?

Thanks

Mostyn

Stream Dance GLX 8`3" 3# with a Loomis Current 3-4# Reel
Not mine its my Grandads but he lets me borrow it while he used his Gladstone 7` 4#

He gave up Fishing last October due to getting too old and his Knees giving him Gip and so I asked if I can have the Rods

Do you Know what he said

They are both mine when I beat his PB river Brown

Oh well you think set your grandson a little challenge rather than just giving him on a plate

No his Bl**dy River Brown PB is 8lb and was about 20 years ago

Iceland or the States. Or tell him, what with inflation and all, that 8-pounder from 20 years ago is more like a 5-pounder today.

Possible on the Usk but not going to be easy then again what is that’s worthwhile

He got his PB on the Annan so may give that a go this summer

As for abroad his is a bit of a joker so would probably add a not abroad clause after I got one on a foreign trip

I may just have to wait until his eyes get worse and then swap them for some Cheep Tat of the same lengths and hope he never notices

sorry for hijacking the thread

Love using a 6' cane rod (Nick Strang) in the late spring and summer when the canopy is at its fullest. In the winter a longer (7ft) carbon rod gives a little more control over nymphs.

I love my hardy marksman, on my smaller cane rods, feels really nice, I have and ultralight disc l/a in 5wt as well, which is a lovely reel but i find the marksman just feels nicer for small stream stuff, the ultralight for rivers and small still waters

got me wondering what the weight difference is now

this looks really interesting, especially might be handy for dapping over taller vegetation on the smaller streams late summer, without the need for actually being in the stream

I use, or will use as I have not long had it, a Streamflex 7' 6" #3 with a small Bloke Reel, I plan on changing the reel this year though for a Litespeed 1 as the Bloke is a little on the heavy side. I also plan at somp point to get a Cane rod, not sure which yet but I am thinking 6' #2.

Not really interested in Tenkara. I find casting part of the joy of fly fishing.

I used a 7'#3 Hardy Marquise rod with the matching Marquise #2/3 reel . Second chioce was a 8' #4/5 Daiwa Altmor S rod with the matching Altmor S 100 fly reel. If the stream allows more open space I was using Hardy Ultralite 8'6'' #5 rod /it weights just 68g/ and Ultralite #5 reel. But like Mostyn , I also have a #4 Harris cane rod with a 3'' Hardy Bougle Mk IV reel and Thebault level #4 silk line -I love this outfit!
