Default Beginner Help please

I have taken the plunge and joined a club with fishing rights on a small stream that is no more than 5 or 6 meters across in most places and stocked with brownies which have grown onto fish of upto 5lb.

Ive bought a lovely original 1oz Orvis Streamline 7' weight 4 and Im now looking for a line to match.

Can anyone give me some advice please on what line to use and buy.
Should I get a WF or DT and should I match it to a #4 or overline it a buy a #5.
If I buy a #5 will this be to heavy for such a small stream.

This will be my first attempts at running water as Im used to reservoirs but really looking forward to having a go this year.

Also any advice on what flies and sizes to tye would be a great help.
Its a small clay based stream in the Midlands if this helps.

Marcus, congratulations on your wise move to the running water, you wont be going back now if your fishing a 4 wt rod i see no need to over line with a 5 wt. i normally use rio lines but they are bloody expensive. i did venture over to the pirate lines last season and i was pleasantly surprised. give one a try they are cheap enough. Jon.

p.s i would use a dt.

I would definitively stick to a four weight and would not try to overline that rod. The Pirate on here does a great four weight and I'ld recommend contacting MrTrout for some of his three foot furled leaders. As to flies, some small CDC and Elk sedges, Stewart's Fancy, Renegades and Double Badgers, Foam beetles, Griffith's Gnats, and grass hoppers for dries. For nymphs I'ld stick to PTN's, GRHE's, Shrimp patterns and some small wooley buggers in black or olive.

Take care

Terry

I'd stick with a 4wt. Fishing streams that small you won't see much difference between a WF and DT as you'll rarely have more than 30' out side of the rod tip. If you go for a DT then you can turn it round when it starts too get a bit worn.
As far as brands I'm a big fan of Rio lines but as pointed out they are expensive , however when I went over to using them for my 4wt fishing, rods I had given up on started to really sing.
What river is it? I know a lot of the rivers in the area. As far as fly choice goes then a good start is to take a kick sample, see what comes up and choose your fly from there but a S16 GRHE gold head is always a good start on most of the rivers around that way.

Cheers

Andy

Cheers for your advice guys its much appreciated as I am really getting into something I have very little knowledge of.

The river is the Swift which runs through Leicestershire if anyone knows it.

Ill stick with a 4# DT on your recomendations and if anyone who knows the river can give any advice re flies it would be much appreciated.

Is it fair to say that most of the time it will be dry fly fishing looking for opportunities.
