Default Danielsson reel?

I thought this might be a good place to ask...

...thinking of getting a Danielsson origonal reel as a replacement for a dying Hardy Marksman.

They look good and people speak highly of them - but they seem to have a rather peculiar construction.

What do people think of them?

Nice reels Matt, just keep them away from grit and sand, it gets into the rollers easily.
Similar problem with the old Marksman really, it was it's weak spot.
I have the Dry fly, and they are very light and smooth.

Thanks folks.

Hmm... the grit problem is exactly why I'm giving up on the Marksman. Been back to Hardy twice, and I treat it with kid gloves. Such a shame, because they're lovely reels otherwise.

Any other suggestions for a light, large arbour reel for 2-3 wt lines? Other than the Vision GT...

Islander IRLA? Supposedly the best click n pawl in its class

Cancel that, I thought there was an IR2LA but there's only an IR3LA suitable for 4-5wt rods.. there's an IR1 which is non LA

nice reels, have a couple of the bigger versions. I've never found the grit too bad, wouldn't turn me off purchasing another.

Show me a fly reel which finds grit and sand agreeable

I've been using a Danielsson Nymph for three seasons now and it has performed faultlessly, in a fairly gritty environment as well. I just dunk it in the river before packing up - a quick shake to get the water out and remember to take it out of the bag when I get home. And slacken off the drag nut too. Which I do with all of my reels anyway, in fact.

Totally agree lads, just saying, be a bit more careful, the rollers are at risk of grit entering easily.
Otherwise a fine piece of engineering.

Great - thanks.

And the drag nut... According to thier marketing paperwork, it's not actually a drag nut, and when tightened, causes it to tighten *both* ways. Am I understanding this right? Doesn't quite make sense...

Hi Matt,
can't agree more with the comments about Danielsson reels, I have four of their reels including two light weight salmon reels and a light weight sea trout reel to a feather weight 2six trout reel which I can highly recommend. [Apparently the newer version is now called the F3W 2six].

Regards
JohnClayton
