Default river don sheffield

Does anyone fish the don in sheffield if so how do you fish it. I have been using buzzers to good effect with the grayling giong up to 2 1/2lbs and trout to 3lbs recently although the norm is 1/2lb. I know a lot of people will prob think this is a rubbish river to the side of such as the wye but it is teeming with fish and ive seen people bringing instructors up from notts + birmingham just to fish it. 10 yrs ago it was virtually a dead river but not now.

hi there lee71 ive seen trout in the river don at doncaster and stainforth end as well only one or two last year but i was fishing the year before that on the canal kirk sandle and caught a rainbow on the pole 5oz or so.I think that the trout are put in to see the quality of water only a thought why the trout are in there. i might try a fly line on the river next year ive not been to see it for some time as ive been floatr tubing alot this season all over the country. but i will have a good look at my end of the river this year just to see if there are any fish rising. there is a good spot to see them at the back of the prison just over the north bridge in doncaster. ideal for a good cast. ill let you know if i see any signs of them after the winter months get better. there are alot of fish in the don its very clear most of the time and clean ive seen loads of other fish come out of the don theres lots of barbel. even after the polish have eaten most of them. nice to see that its looking good at your end great stuff keep me up dated ill come and try a line if you find any signs of them.

Hi mate the fishing just a mile up river from sheff wednesday ground and all the rest of way up is magic one lad i know who works at a tackle shop had a 5lb 12oz wild brown out although on trotting gear, but honestly mate its full of wild brownies + grayling. One session i had last year (trotting) i had about 45lb of fish in 4-5 hrs mainly grayling and a few trout all from one pool although theyre not all as good as that there are quite a few also its harder on fly gear but a good challenge. Ive been watching and listening to the tutors who teach and the more experienced fly lads who fish there while theyre fishing and its helped no end. Oh and another plus its all free fishing. I might also add its not like the don ive seen in donny its all fast shallow glides with loads of pools and some deeper calmer stretches.

That's excellent. I've had a few visits, fishing nymphs, and I can't seem to get past half-a-dozen grayling. I had a go trotting last Thursday and caught around 2 dozen grayling and, unfortunately, a dozen trout - none of the fish was above 10oz! My mate also caught a similar number, he's been trotting several times - anything above 12oz has so far eluded us.

Hi all - I'll stick my usual promo onto the Don thread about the Sheffield branch of Trout in the Town (SPRITE). I'm having a meeting with the folk at Sheff Wed ground next week to see if we can have a skip there for our next clean up and fishing sesh on 11th December.

Video of SPRITE start up in 2009 (we made sure that we maintained it as a free membership organisation - so that anyone who fishes the urban Don can put a little bit into looking after the river as well as sharing fishing knowledge).

Trout in the Town

Drop me a line on pgaskell@wildtrout.org for more info etc.

Depends where you fish mate some places are rubbish if you know the beely wood area behind the caravan storage youll get load there but its a bit too cramped for the fly, try trotting you should get loads, some places you might only get a few youve just got to try different areas.p.s you have to walk through the wood to the best spots also seen barbel up to 8lbs and caught chub to 4 1/2lbs and heard reports of much bigger. Sorry if i made it sound as though i caught loads of big uns but i catch then now and again the ones i mentioned are just the biggest ive had. The bigger ones tend to be loners and the smaller ones shoaled up i was on there a couple of weeks ago with two blokes one fly and one trotting gave the bloke trotting some advise to fish as close to the wall as he could and hed get bigger grayling he did and he was amazed at the size differance, although he was catchig plenty where he was a metre closer in made the differance in size,Oh and the fly man caught a couple of his first river fish. p.s sorry if my grammar is bad never went to school i was always fishing
