Default Favorite Dry Fly?

My favorite to fish are Yellow Humpies because they ride so high and make the fish have to get just that much more out of the water. Out of all of them I fish a simple Parachute Adams the most.

Usualy I have Elk hair caddis 12-18-, Prachute adams 14-22, adams 14-22, some midges 18-22 , Humpies 14-18 (yellow/red and Calf hair/elk hair wings) , Some royal Wulffs/coachman , blue wing olives, couple terrestrials, mosquitoes, some cdc variations, mayfly emergers, anything with hackle, Irresistible, Parachute Caddis, and 2 nymphs just incase.

Check out this Rod I made this Fall with some other random pics...

So, what's your favorite Dry Fly?

Mainly stillwater fishing for me. The Irresistible (with a red tag) did really well for me this year, as did a black Bob's Bits. I also took plenty on a fiery brown sedgehog and a on a black version too. Finally, a crane fly pattern took a few for me in the autumn. Other patterns took fish but those were my consistent flies.

Oops. Just seen this was posted in the "small streams" section. I'll retire and keep my mouth shut!

Rivers - got to be a Griffiths Gnat, in various sizes from #16 to #22
Stillwater - Black Gnat with a pearl wing

However - if there is a hatch on - then I'll match the hatch. If nothings happening, I'll fish a fly that I know they'll take whether there's a hatch on or not. If the tried and tested don't work I'll ring the changes. It's a moveable feast.

I don't have and don't think it's a good idea to have a favourite fly. On the streams and rivers I fish, the policy of trying to match-the-hatch seems to be the best. Having a favourite fly could lead to me using it on occasions when I shouldn't...

I am halfway between the favourite fly and Richard's viewpoint. I have favourite patterns for different stages of different species (olive sedge terrestrial etc..) and carry them in a range of sizes to help match the hatch without needing a wheelbarrow for my fly boxes.

I use -

Small olives (emerging and adult) - f-fly
Small sedges (emerging and adult)- f-fly
Large olives (adult) - para type thingy with an olive quill body
Large olives (emerging) - klinkhammer
Spents - BWO spinner pattern (one of RichardW's) or a griffiths gnat
Large sedges - CDC and Elk

A few different terrestrials and no real favourites

If nothing is hatching the GG is normally the first thing on as an exploratory fly

There are flies that generally represent a lot of different food items - so one fly in a range of sizes can cover a lot of situations. That's why I like general patterns - like the GGnat. It's a little ball of fluff, and it takes fish feeding on midges, needle/willow flies, grannom, various olives and other upwings - all sorts.

I am saying what is you favorite fly to tie and to fish with? Just because you have a favorite fly does not mean you fish it all the time, it simple means its more enjoyable to fish with, thats what fly fishing is all about this generation. From my observation I have seen many wild trout take flies that look nothing like the hatch all the time! Just because you see callibaetis' and chironamids coming off does not mean you have to fish them.

We can only wish for summer to come sooner...
