Default Which new rod for small streams?

Morning,

As a recent convert to small stream fishing, I am interested in hearing members views re. a small stream rod- looking mainly in the 7 to 7 1/2 foot range for a #3 to #4.

Have considered a Hardy Classic Featherweight / Orvis Superfine Touch / Used Superfine trout bum - any views on these - or other choices in this sort of price range.

thanks,

Karl

I recently bought a wychwood 7ft 3/4 weight rod from angling centre stirling paid about £39 not been on the river to try it yet, matched it up with a reel from sunkisbob and a dt line from barrio all in it cost round about £100.I did not want to spend to much because most of my river fishing is done on the medium to large rivers but i do like to fish the small streams when i get the chance [not often enough]

Hi Karl, if you are looking in that price range, take a look at the Vision Cult, 7.6ft #3, fantastic rod, honest.

Hi Karl;

If you want to save some cash then try the Shakey Oddyssey 7'6" 4 weight. I have one and think it's a fantastic little rod. Especially when you consider that you can pick it up for about 30 quid. If you want to spend more then I would go with MrT's suggestion.

Take care

Terry

For wild brown trout...... (on my local spate rivers they vary from 4oz to 1.25lb. For true small streams (i.e. less than 5 yards across on average), I would use a 1wt or 2wt. For small rivers ( 5 yards to 15 yards on average), I would still use a 1 wt or 2wt.

If you are looking to get the best out of the small streams, drop down to a 2wt as even a 3wt or 4wt is mostly over powered for WBT in small streams.

There are some nice 2wts out there by the firms you mentioned but also others and custom makers as well.

A 7ft, #3,weight with a bit of Class! Get yourself a Hardy Featherweight!

Or maybe a 6ft.6in Orvis One Ounce #2, weight,(Not easy to find; and not cheap as a used rod) they are very special to fish with!

or maybe a 6ft, #2, weight Hardy Flyweight, Just perfect for the smallest of streams!

But there is always a custom cane rod? I'd recommend Tim Harris of harrisflyrods.co.uk

But if it's cheap and good your after? I'd suggest a Fladen vantage 7ft. #3, weight, tremendous value for money.

I use a 6' Hardy Flyweight #2 and simply, it is the best rod I have owned.

The only (minor) downside is that it is a 2 piece so it makes travelling with it a little more difficult i.e. it doesn't fit onto a backpack quite as nicely as my 4 piece rod.
