Question Short rod vs really short rod !!!

Hi Guys

This year i started using a 7' 3wt and im loving it its my first choice on the river.

I cant believe i was scared of using a short short However now im really getting into dry fly river fishing and i find myself fishing smaller and smaller rivers/burns where my 7' seems BIG !

Im wondering about getting a 5' 9" Vision Cult fibre........... ?? But again i find myself scared of the unknown

How short is "too" short ? is there a point where it gets silly ??

Your thoughts and experience please

This is (considered to be) the same rod as the vision
Cabela's: Cabela's 50th Anniversary Custom Glass Rods
I have one and it is excellent for fishing small very overgrown burns, but it is limited in its use for roll casting, mending and upstream nymphs. It is a very soft rod and is really only good for short range work up to 10m it will put out a longer line buts its a lot of effort. So really dry fly at short range is it's forte.
I would reckon a 6' or 6'6" rod is the best size to cover you for most eventualities of small burn fishing. Jon

I use a 6' 3wt JMC Triumph (French rod) and love it on streams and even small rivers. I've been overlining it with a 4 weight line so that it loads faster as my daughter use to use it but think that I'm going to be ordering a 3 weight line from the Pirate before the summer's over.

Take care

Terry

I use a Trion XT 6'6'' 3wt and its a lovely little rod for short range work (under 15 yards).

I've got a 5'2" 3/4 wt that I built from an ultralight fiberglas spinning blank. Sweet little rod when you're in the thick of it. Don't plan to mend much of anything, but for short direct casts it is nice.

I also have a 6'6" rod that will fish a medium stream and let you mend providing you have a high floating line.

Thanks
RIck

I have a 6ft, #2,weight Hardy Flyweight, which works just as well as it's bigger Brother the 7ft,#3, Hardy Featherweight! I would fish anywhere with either of these rods, but the 6ft, flyweight is extremely versatile on overgrown; and difficult small streams! I have 5, small stream rods in different lengths up to 7ft, all in #2, or #3, weights. They are all used on a regular basis! I rotate them in use; although my favourite is my 6ft.3in #3, Harris Cane Rod.

I think going below 6ft, means you will need to compromise in other areas. JMO

Seem to remember Lee Wulff landing a 25 pound Sockeye on a 6 foot #4/5 rod to demonstrate there is no need for a longer rod!
Personally I much prefer a short rod and feel it actually gives better line control and are far less tiring over a day.
I also find I never bump fish off and am rarely broken, even on big fish, but when I used to favour fast action casting rods, Xp's T3's etc was forever being broken, even with 5 pound or more tippets, but with #2/3 rods, I can use a 2.5 with little risk and presntation is much much improved, resulting in increased offers.

I'd agree with that H,

I much prefer fishing with a shorter; and lighter weight fly rod, even on the main stem of the Taff, I've started using a 7ft.6in #3/4, weight rod! The longest rod I'd use on a stream would be 7ft, #3, weight; and of-course you can have two piece rods up to 7ft, without worrying about how to get the rod tube in the boot of the car! (I do love fishing with a two piece fly rod) And it's surprising how well the short lightweight rods can subdue a large fish in to submission very quickly, of course there is the pleasure factor you derive from getting a good fish on very light tackle, certainly takes fly fishing back to it's original art form. Relax and enjoy, the fiinesse of fishing with a small lightweight fly rod; nothing like it.

I agree with Jon's rod length comments he is quite correct on the application and his suggestion of a 6' - 6'6" rod is sound advice.

The Cabela's glass rod is not the same rod as the Vision Cult Fiber rod. I and my friend Ed fish the Cult Fiber rods in 6'6" #4 and both Ed and Ben my other buddy took a look a the Cabela's glass rods and told me that they have the same lengths, line designations and cork shape but they are definitely not the same blank. For example, the Vision is a non sanded blank the Cabela's is sanded and feels heavier. Not a bad rod for the price but they are not the same rod as the Vision Cult Fiber.
Both Ed and I are very pleased with the 6'6" for brook & med size stream fishing. We Yanks however toss some #8 flies both wet and dry form time to time and prefer the #4 line to the light lines used by most of the posters here. We generally fish dry flies #16 - #10 and the 6'6" Cult Fiber delivers even air resistant dry flies very well and with delicacy. I also fish small bucktails with my rod and it delivers them quite well. It is a versatile small stream rod.

I use the original Superfine 6'6" #2 and it is sublime.

I bought the Hardy 5' #2, only fished with it once ....... just to light. Although on the stream I just fished it would have been fantastic.
