Default Leaders for #2 line

Hi All.

Need advice about leaders for a 6ft #2 rod. Are furled leaders the way or should I stick to mono tapered?

Ernie, there's no right and wrong: only personal preference.

With mono you should match the leader butt diameter to the flyline tip diameter for a smooth turn over: I have no experience of furled.

Monofilament and make your own...

Hi Ernie;

I'm one of those who really love furled leaders. I have a 6ft #3 that I use for small stream work and I have one of MrTrout's three foot furled leaders on it. Nice tight loops, roll casting is a snap and sets down straight and soft as thistle down with the furled leader and another three feet of mono as tippet.

Take care

Terry

Ditto. You'll want something around 0.020" diameter from my experience, and fairly soft material.

I also like to thread my leaderbutts through the line on really thin lines. Use a light bulb to heat the end of the line and make it softer. Then thread a needle through the end about 1". Insert the butt of the leader into the warmed fly line and ensure it goes in at least 1/2" or so. Put a drop of superglue on the tip of the line where the leader comes out and let it dry. It will be there permanently, but you can test it yourself by pulling it pretty hard. That will give you the smallest, most delicate connection you'll find. If you are concerned about it pulling out (I'm not) then you can whip some tying thread around the junction and coat with aquaseal or superglue. That stiffens it a bit and IMO isn't required.

I also go a bit shorter on leaders for short rods. I normally stick around 7' for small streams and 7' rods or shorter.

Thanks
Rick

Thanks for the prompt posts. I'll give the furled and the mono leaders a go.

Really richard, you'd use the same 22lb butt section on a #2 flyline as you would on a #6?

That would depend on the thickness of the tip. If the tip is really very fine then select a monofilament that is a little bit thinner than the fly line. A good guide would be to use a monofilament that is about the same diameter as the fine needle. Also cutting the monofilament into a point is worth doing to help with the threading through the hole made up the tip of the fly line.

Default Furled Leader

Hello Ernie

The shorter furled leaders are really good for the outfit you speak of.I use the Stuart Crofts endorsed leader retailed by spidersplus and made by Rodney Dibble.I have furled leaders also made by Mr Trout which are excellent although not for my in the water under the trees wand.Check them out I think they are brilliant and they last at least a season unless you really damage them.

Best JP
