Hi Maxie,

Have a look on the small steam section! lots of discussions on length of rods and line weights suitable for small stream fishing, on the "Small Stream Thread"

IMO a 7ft,#3,weight is the best possible size for all round stream fishing; and if you don't want to spend a great deal of money? Have a look at the Fladen Vantage 7ft, #3, or the Shakespeare Range of rods, or Snowbee! Then there's the Greys G,& GRXi+ series which wont break the bank, Maybe you could get one of the older model Greys GRXi 7ft, rods? Nicer than the new model IMO. A good starting point for stream fishing.

I can recommend fladen 7 foot #3. I bought this after reading Mostyns views on the rod. I bought it from Whitby angling for about £25. Getting a #3?line is not easy for the right price. I got a mill end from Mullarkeys Burton on Trent. I have to say the outfit works very well. Follow Moatyns posts they ate excellent and you won't go wrong. Good luck!

has anyone used one of these:

Crazy River Brook Trout XS 2pc Deluxe Fly Rod ( 6ft #2 ) - Launch Promotion

The stream i'm currently fishing is very small, I was going to get a 7ft rod but am thinking about going even smaller - however most sub 7ft rods seem expensive.

I know No 3s have their fans but I use a 4 - on some very small streams and have never felt overgunned. 3s are fun till it's windy in my experience.2s- well, if you want to make a point but no thanks.

it was more the length of the rod i was thinking about.

at the moment i'm making do with an 8'6 but its really too long. given how confined the stream i'm intending to fish most of this year is, i'd like to go as short as possible, but that rod was the only sub 7ft rod i'd seen at a bargain price. i'll probably end up going for the fladden vantage 7ft though

I was given one of those as a gift last year - - - An absolute delight to use, and I find myself reaching for it in preference to other rods in the quiver. Excellent value I would say.

Cheers aiden,

have you tried pairing it with a #3 line? I'm tempted to get one if i can sell my hardy, but was thinking of a #3 line to help with a bit of wind / short casts.

What rod and line weight combinations do you have right now?

Small rods are unnecessary on small streams and in many circumstances can be a hindrance.
