Hi Phil and welcome to the forum. Any reel with a '3' in it should do you. Leader/tippet length, as short as you can get away with (6 to 8ft). The more open and slow running the stream, the longer you're going to need, but don't use longer than you can handle. Worth doing a search on here for MrTrout furled leaders, cheap to buy and worth every penny. They turn the fly over perfectly. Wishing you the best of luck for the forthcoming season, Tim

hello phil, this is my way of fishing and expect you will get other forum members say what they do so you get a fair idea to know. if i am fishing a stream as i do most 15 20 30 mtrs across or even less i use 1 w/t above so would use a d/t 4 on 3 w/t rod, why for me you dont need a to put out such a long back cast if you understand and can roll cast better. as for a tippet i never use longer than the rod most 2 mtrs and try not to kink end of fly line using keeper ring so tippet is at top ring when walking river. as for reel i dont use small reels unless have a large arbour, my d/t silk is on a old 3.5 inch with enough backing, my plastic lines d/t 4 and 5 and w/f 5 are on a 4/5 and 5/6 large arb oldish reels. i dont use expensive lines either and just purchased 2 nice lines from kind forum members and thank them for that. so good luck and good fishing

Get the cheapest and lightest reel you can find. My main reels are plastic and can be bought for under a tenner. If you already have a #4 line then you could try it and see but your rod will most likely work best with the line weight it was designed for.

For leaders and tippets there is a post here that takes you through it. There are some valuable advantages from using leaders that many might regard as long but you should decide on the length when you are there. The forum is no place to end up with a hard and fast rule to stick to as that will compromise you where and when it matters - the waterside and to suit the conditions on the day you are there.

Phil, welcome, many views out there - to get some really good advice on here rather than just an opinion or seven, some info on the specific rod and perhaps a pic or two of the venue/s you intend to fish would allow better feedback.

You might of course think this sounds like too much hard work, which is probably a healthy viewpoint .

Hello Phil!

If you prefer light gear and donīt fish too much goldheads and such, a light reel that iīve been using last season is the Guideline Haze 24. Works fine with my #3 & #4... When it comes to the rod and using a heavier line, itīs mostly your own feeling of how the rod preforms with that line that is the measure. Not so much the classing of the line... I believe they are more guidelines than stern rules.

It all depends on your casting style, the rod action and how far you are casting.
I tend to go a line heavier than the rod rating on most of my stream and small river fishing as you are never going to get the full line out to weight the rod as it was designed and rated for.
With my 6'6 Greys Streamflex and 8' Hardy Demon on small rivers I always go a line heavier as I can still shoot the line nicely when necessary even in tight spaces where there's not much room for a back cast.
With my 9' Greys G-Tec and 10' Hardy Demon where I'm on larger rivers or stillwaters and making much longer casts then using a heavier line doesn't feel good at all.
See if you can borrow a few lines and try them as different brands and tapers will be different again.
I've wasted so much money buying lines that just aren't suited to my rods and what I was intending to do with them!

Who said we were experts? He asked for opinions!
