I use a BBS I or II, a W M Salter, or a J A Forbes 2.5 Magnesium Reel, or a Hardy Lightweight!

I also Like the CFO, and the Danielson Midge is really light weight!

There are so many to chose from; and the £price plays a big part in what you want or what you can afford.

Have a look on the small streams section, this has been discussed many times.

Personally I use an Orvis BBS II. Lovely looking reel and light enough.

Mind you, I think most fly reels are over-priced for what you get ... but the Orvis reels are nice and traditional looking and I kind of like that.

I agree mate - go for a little orvis. If it's for a 4wt go for the mid arbor (it's a lovely reel they're starting to sell them off a bit cheaper now) and if it's lighter I reccommend the BBS.

I like my 35yr old Hardy Marquis #5. I think anything smaller is way too small to be useful. My pal has an American set up he purchased when over there on a business trip. Lovely (REALLY lovely) little 61/2 foot rod and a "matched" reel from the same maker. It's ridiculously small and winding up loose line is a nightmare! You don't need disc drags or fancy balance weights for small stream fishing (why do all modern fly reels have these ugly non-functional chrome balance weights opposite the handle?).

If I was looking for a replacement for my Marquis I would go no further than a Rimfly Regular. They do everything a reel should and you can pick them up for nowt. In the rough and tumble of small streams it won't matter if they get scraped and bashed. You should see the state of my old Hardy..

I use a BBSIII for anything up to #6wt - v light, reliable and hard to beat.

I have been looking for a cheapish lightweight reel and stumbled across the Sonik SKlite, worth a look. The Salter seems a real bargain but just a little heavy for me. N

Default Small reel

I went for this little chap.

Marado Evolution F & FX Fishing Reels

Very light and looks pretty without flashing like a strobe light in the sun. I don't think you need fancy drags and such for this sort of work.

I seem to remember it cost a fair bit less 2 years ago, but that could be down to currency exchange rates.

Nick

This is cheap and it does not matter how many times I fall on it:

Greys of Alnwick GREYS GLA 80 FLY REEL 2/3/4# G00018 from Fosters of Birmingham

regards

Vince
