Default Returning to fly fishing after 30 years

I've finally retired after 30 years exile in Manchester, pulling bored carp from dirty puddles and want to get back to the small river trout fishing of my youth.

This winter I am starting on grayling. Can anybody suggest any day ticket waters I can start on? I don't mind travelling to the lakes, dales or North/Mid Wales.
Also are there any clubs with grayling fishing who usually have membership vacancies?

Sorry the question is so vague but I have been away from the rivers for a long time. (I have just been buying some fly tying gear - the world has changed since the days when a couple of spiders and a hackled Greenwell's or Tups would see you through most days!)

Hi Bill,

Welcome back to fly angling; and the forum! You'll get lots of advise on here. I had about 25, years away from fly fishing; and when I started up again, it had really moved on!! I hadn't lost my touch, or canny approach to fly fishing - But, some of the tackle had changed, the fly lines had improved; and the flies used had completely altered, although, the flies you and I used 30, years ago, still work really well; along with some old fashioned techniques!

Klinkhammer and Czech nymph took me by surprise! also bead heads on Hares Ear and PT nymphs, but they work well, I use mostly dry fly! but the winter sees me fish with nymphs, or klink&dink, but if the fish are moving to the surface? you cannot beat dry fly for Grayling! The lads from your area will point you in the right direction for possible venues! I'm in South Wales - just a bit far for you on a day trip, although the Grayling fishing is excellent!

Hope you have many happy hours on the river!

Regards

Mostyn

You didn't get much help on here Bill.

Mid Wales has some excellent Grayling fishing, also leominster Herefordshire!

Have a look at the WUF passbook, The Wye and Usk Foundation | River Conservation & Fishing Tel 01982 560357 - or -560788. Hope this helps? Ludlow/ Leominster is about an 80, minute drive from Manchester, providing the motorways are clear.

The Caersws Angling Association in Mid Wales offers a cheap day ticket on the upper Severn for 7 miles of double bank fishing.

Good luck!

The Dee near Bala has day tickets as well. Big river mind you, some pools are 50 yds across - epic. Some big grayling in there though, and it's lovely scenery.

Hi Bill, sounds like you are somewhere in Lancs.
You can get a day ticket £10 for the upper reaches of the Hodder at Slaidburn village store, park in the village car park by the river, loads to go at they will come up to a sz14-16 klinkhammer but also snipe & purple works as in the pic below!
You can also get on the Ribble at Mitton, ticket about £5 from the Aspinall Arms, just outside of Whalley Village.
Cheers, tight lines,
Dave.

Thanks for that, noeyedeer (like it). I'll give the Hodder a shot as soon as. Sounds ideal for me.
