Default 5 days on the till

I have just returned from my hols and as you can see i had 5 days on the river till.My main aim was to try and catch a sea trout, i started each day early for the sea trout and late on in the day but no luck,i dont know if it was the way i was fishing for them or i was just unlucky not to catch one.My set up was a 10ft 7weight rod,a floating line and as it was a bit gusty i was fishing with a 9 to 12ft 10lb flurocarbon leader with just the one fly stoats tail and varients of it and a few other flies size 14,i was told to fish the streamy looking water and let it drift into the slacker water then when it was on the dangle retrieve it varying the speed but as i have said no luck.I know there were fish there because there were other guys fishing on worm and spinner and they were catching fish and some really nice ones, please dont tell me i should have chucked the fly rod and followed suit as i really wanted to cach one with the fly, was my technique okay or should i have been doing something different ?

You were robbed plain and simple!

Till Sea Trout enter the system as early as May,any fish by now would be very stale(even those fresh from the sea).

Your methods sound fine, its just a case of being in the right place at the right time.Whoever sold you the fishing ripped you off if they claimed September was a good month for Sea Trout.

Robbed? Perhaps not, hores50 has had a frustrating time but has probably learned a lot. We don't actually know the beat he was fishing?

The Till has a reputation as an early SeaTrout river. Early May on can be good. The Till though fishes reasonably well for Sea Trout well into September with the right tactics. The Salmon fishing can be very good too with a rise in the water. It all depends on the water conditions. We have had a lot of varied water conditions recently. The Tweed and it's tributaries have been up and down constantly. Horeses50 may just have been unlucky to hit it when it was too high or too low. More likely he just didn't know the water and where the fish were likely to be lying.

Certainly if I was advising anyone fishing it, I would suggest for best results (there are always a chance of a fish at any time though!) they fish it at last light and in to the dark with an intermediate or sinking line and a much bigger fly than a 14. Fish that have been in the water for some time are much less inclined to move for a fly on the surface. Fish deep big a black and put the fly in their mouth is my motto.

You seem a bit confused here, fresh from the sea is fresh as far as I know.

Yes the Till does get an early run but the fish do keep coming and are still coming. The problem with the river this year has been a lack of water since the start of the season. The rain last Thursday provided the first lift in months and I suspect this may be the real reason for the lack of success.

It is important to check out the conditions on the system you are fishing prior to your trip, for the Till there is plenty of info available on the Fishpal website.

Robbed, no, unfortunate, yes.

I was thinking maybe this was an article about being overworked at Tescos

hmmm fish may be fresh from the sea but not really fresh as such they may be in various states of colouring up ready to spawn i guess.

Salmon and sea trout do not colour up in the sea, this is a biological process which only begins once they enter the fresh water, a fresh fish is a fresh fish no matter when it enters river and all fish fresh in from the sea are silver.

could they colour up due to biological processes in the estuary ?

Many thanks for your expert opinion, but Im afraid that your very wrong.

Tweed/Till Sea Trout do colour up at sea , the process seems to start early July.Talk to anyone who worked the tidal netting stations before the buy out and they will tell you that after July the buyers wouldnt take Sea Trout as the flesh has gone white.

Seems to be a Tweed thing from what I understand , heres a fish caught from the sea near Berwick during Sept Fresh? or Silver ?

Robbed is perhaps a bit harsh but someone took your money for a week and knew fine well you had very little chance.

Fish running the Forth system also colour up in the estuary.
