Hi lobelowe,
I fished the Clay Pool regularly until about 5 years ago, which was when they put the moorings along Nunnery. The problem then arose that often the fish you would hook there would run and run (whether ST, Bass, mullet or BIG carp), and the moorings meant an almost certain snag and break off.
Things have gotten much better this year since Ringwood AA have taken over and allow night fishing from a boat (with the right ticket). This means you can fish clear of the moorings into the Clay Pool itself. I've done it once this season and hooked and lost a good fish but had a great night.
Often the place is heaving with fish into double figures but they are not easy, I've never had more than a brace in one night. Usual ST methods work well and fish will take at most stages of the tide.
If you don't have access to a boat I would concentrate on fishing low tides where you can wade out along the gravel bar into the Clay Pool and cover more lies. If you are going to fish the higher stages of the tide from the bank, make sure you have some strong leader on and play the fish hard to prevent it wrapping round the moorings.
I have a friend who still fishes there regularly, PM me and I can put you in touch.
There is something really special about the Clay Pool, the mix of fish, the smell of the mint, the wild horses. You should have some fun
Best
Jon
