Default Droppers

I'm off sea trouting tomorrow for the very first time I've, got everything but sea trout experience packed in my old x trail So my big question is, should I use a dropper or not, I have got 20 years fly fishing experience behind me but I have never night fished, the river is not a noted sea trout river but they are there and there are not too many bank side obstructions.

I'm planning on using a size 8ls fly on the point, so if the answer is yes to using a dropper then how far from the point and what size hook ? Many thanks Paul

I do not use a dropper for night fishing. But if I was going to then I would use another sz 8, 3' to 4' from point fly.

I do a lot of night fishing myself and use a dropper about half the time.
To be honest it depends on conditions what size flies you use. I tie my dropper 3 to 4 feet from the point, a size 8 medicine is one of my most common dropper flies but sometimes its a size 14 thompsons terror, others a large surface lure or anything else you can think of! all depends on what you think will work best on the night.
Just remember when you're casting to keep everything slow and deliberate, cast big loops and don't over extend yourself or you'll end up in all sorts.

Hope this helps.

Jim/BW thanks, I guess its best to keep my approach fluid, I think I will start with one and if it causes problems my old friend "doctor scissors" will soon sort it out
