Default Fly Size

Iv heard that some anglers go up a size at night , and iv also seen flies tied on size 1/0 2/0 hooks for night fishing ... Iv always used a team of 14s and sometimes 10s .

has anyone got any preference on fly size for sea trout ?

size 8 longshanks work best for me
95% of my fish are caught on them
most of the rivers i fish would be small but they work just as well on bigger rivers too dont be afraid to use bigger flies, that was my fault up to a few seasons ago i only ever used size 10s and 12s then

Small lowland river. I've moved up in hook size over the years. I like to fish tubes but find trebles don't tend to be great for C&R so I think of big longshank hooks like slim tubes. the catch rate seems as good.

Cheers

eights and ten for me longshank if possible heavy weights i only use singles and doubles no trebles for me they make a mess of the fish as we cant predict the size of the fish i tend to set up for catch and release i also switch to barbless if im definetlt going catch and release more fun

You want to go onto the salmon fishing forum mate, then you'll know all about C&R.

Years ago, [early 80's] it would never have crossed my mind to return a sea trout, but nowadays with them in short supply it's rare for me to keep one.

Prefered fly size does seem to vary from one region to another but when I used to do a lot of night fishing on small West Country streams this was my usual choice of hook too. I like the way a big single cuts through the surface and gets fishing straight away, an important point on a small river. Second choice for me was 2" -4" long tandems.

Obviously there are some nights when they will want smaller but on the whole I found bigger was better.

At the weekend I put a 5 inch long pike spoon through a pool (in low clear water) and five good sea trout gave chase! They aren't afraid of a mouthfull
