Question Afon Teifi, what fly?

Helo folks,

Off to Ceridigion in August - if you had to choose a fly for Sewin, which one would you stake a night of zzz's on?

I'm going to tie a few 'essentials' but have never tackled a Sewin fly before, so it would be wise to keep it suitable for dummies .

Ddiolch, STD.

For me it has to be my butcher variant Toby. This fly is never off the dropper, and has accounted for many a sea trout. As for the point fly, well usually a tube or waddington of a similar pattern, with hair wing instead of crow.

It's a size 8 Partridge Salar.

Just had a look at the Flies for the Teifi page I put up many years ago and realised the gallery and the path to it is rather cr@p but the flies - some tied by John Gray - and photos are excellent. A few tubes and snakes would do it a favour but they weren't liked much when that page went up and still aren't with a lot of the old hands.

Indisputably one of the best ever sewin patterns is is a hair wing Silver Stoat size 8 single hook. Partridge YD4As are good but so are the code 01 Wilson light weight singles. An all black version minus the tail is a good bet too.

Stuart is right about a tube fly on the point, go for aluminium it gets the depth quickly and keeps the cast straight. Cotton buds are good for plastic tubes, nice on an intermediate /sinking line if you can hack wading up to your chest and realising the line's wrapped round your leg after a fish has taken it. Waterproof black tape or a crisp packet for silver gets a cheap and grief free body.

Salar hooks mmmmmmmmm - expensive tree decorations but they are very tasty - maybe after the recession in 2020!

Thanks DB, good link and that's a nice looking one posted here - plenty more flies than I'll manage to tie in a few weeks.

thought that recessions were worked on 10 year cycles not 10 year duration?

I think I can stretch to a packet of size 8 Salars, (no plane tickets or channel crossings to head West Wales way for a break); it will be Christmas come early Cardigan way in August, I'll make sure I do a good job of decorating the bankside with tinsel.

Hope we get some rain before then. The water level is very low at the moment. Caught quite a few lasy year on a black fritz booby pulled across the top at 2 o-clock in the morning
