How about doing a Google search on the forum (see the bottom of each page "Google Search Fly Fishing Forums") using the search criteria: "difference brown trout sea trout"
I'm not being arsey by not answering directly, but forum members really ought to learn about this search facility

You are not alone in the recognition question!
Only experience, and handling, of numerous fish will make you sure of your diagnosis!
Brown trout, as you are probably aware are easy to tell.
Big round red spots, brownish flanks and back, yellowish or white belly. In some locations they are silverish, but still with reddish spots.
Sea trout have no red spots at all, indeed the spots which should be red are black, and star shaped, and whole body is silverish coloured, unless it has been in river a while then it is an oaky colour.
Search forum for pictures of both, and you will see what i mean.
regards
bert

Hey d_j
I fished llyn coron on anglesey last weekend which holds brown and has sea trout runs. Fantastic fishing with some good fish around 3/4lb to 1lb1/4. I fished with a friend and we had 23 fish between us. Some good browns and sea trout with a few smaller fish. My local stillwater is llyn cefni on anglesey which also has some fantadtic brown trout fishing as well as some rainbow trout.

If you need any info about both lakes dont hesitate to contact me

Regards

Jonathan

Good advice, however I'm a bit mystified by these bright wee fellys that show up from time to time at a very dark peaty reservoir I fish.It is impossible for any migratory fish to enter but these guys look like they have all the traits of a smolt or finnock.Recognition is not always as cut and dried it would seem.

The fish below is a typical example in terms of colouration from this loch.
