Sunday 9th May. A new record was set today for the heaviest sea trout on Lough Cuurrane. The specimen weighted a staggering 12lbs 13ozs. This amazying fish was caught by Cork angler Liam Ellis around the Black Rocks. Liam landed his fish twenty five minutes after thinking he had caught the bottom.

Getting on for the size of a decent Welsh sewin. Why is it that Currane produces 99% of the big Irish sea trout? I know that the Towy produces far more big sea trout than any other UK river but not to the extent that Currane dominates the Irish list.

i thought that honor went to the river dyfi

Graeme Harris, in his book with M. Morgan, stated it was because the Waterville system is unique in containing the long lived sea trout race more usual to Wales. Other Irish fisheries having the faster growing short-lived race.
He also said most Irish sea trout died of old age as they were hardly fished for.




Speycaster, the Conway was also noted for its very large sea trout. Sadly not faring as well these days. Sewinbasher is correct in that the Towy system (musn't forget the Cothi) consistently produced higher returns than the Dovey, by at least double, for similar weights.

For someone who's usually meticulous with their posts, you don't half get that one wrong a lot Ephemerella. Conwy.

The Dyfi possibly produces the absolute largest but far more 10lb+ sea trout come from the Tywi than all the other Welsh rivers put together. Although Mr Pengs himself got a very decent fish from the Conwy last season, sadly its big fish reputation is as far back in history as the Wye's reputation for 40lb salmon.

There are substantial double figure fish from other Welsh rivers other than the Tywi, Dyfi and Conwy in recent seasons but the Tywi system is a long way in front.

Arguable... didn't I post an image of that 18.5 lb Chester fish recently?


There was a Cheshire lawyer, his name temporarily escapes me , who took a 21 lb Conwy sea trout at Plas Madoc (Ponpren pool) and, a then record, 21.5 lb fish on the Gwibernant/Lledr junction in the same year.
