Default Advice for a Newbie on the E Lothian Tyne

Hi

Decided to buy a ticket for the Tyne this year and was hoping somone might be kind enough to offer some advice on targeting sea trout. Have heard that fishing the stretch towards the Phantassie (sp?) estate is a sensible place to start, but haven't got a clue what time of year or time of day, line flies etc etc.

Any advice or help would be very gratefully received

Thanks in advance

Nick

been a decade or so since i fished tyne, however things wont have changed much!
Dusk and darkness fishing best when water is low, size 10 and twelve greenwells glory peter ross, silver butcher usual mix!
However fish cant get over knowes weir until river spates.
first main run should be now, as long as river rises.
day time fishing below knowes weir through tynninghame estate down to estuary used to be available on permit on south bank, about 2 miles of fishing, well worth a shot on outgoing tide at all times of day, especially when river hasnt risen much.
after spate is dropping hailes castle to east linton is good stretch, about 2 miles again, as is sandys mill down to hailes, about 1 mile, but tricky casting due to overhanging trees, south bank at phantassie only good for 2 to 3 hundred yards. later in season haddington golf course bank down to cascades weir worth a shot, again about a mile of fishing, but only on dropping spate.
look at elaa web site for updates and tips.
regards
bert

Bert's advice is right. I've had some success fishing daytime after spates as the water begins to lose it's colour (which can take a few days as the Tyne runs through rich agricultural land which carries lots of sand). Whilst the fish pass at Knowes is far from perfect, fish do now get through it during lower water too. The ELAA ticket now includes the Tyninghame Estate water, and the season ticket is very good value for pretty much the whole river (£30). Large fish run the river so make sure your tackle is up to the task. It can be a tricky river to fish, due to being heavily wooded in places and with woody debris here and there, and also because the sea trout are easily spooked in such a small river, but a nice challenge. Check http://www.elaa.co.uk/

Thanks for the advice. Will keep an eye on the weather and get down after work to ry my luck. Like the idea of a challenge. But probably best to "practice" at dusk before attempting full-on nocturnal sortie.

Will keep you posted

NO!
Get down during day, walk the bit you are going to fish, fire out a cast or two to get distance, but dont do it at dusk!
dusk is prime taking time, you dont want to be blundering around in pools at this time!

Went down for an inital reccie a couple of nights ago (7pmish). Walked from bridge at tyningham up to Knowes weir. River was really low with (to my inexperienced eye) few pools deep enough to be holding much - but maybe I was wrong? Looks like we'll need a lot of rain before this stretch becomes fishable - Is the Tyne always this low??

Is a classic farmland east coast spate river.
needs a lot of rain to put it up, but will rise fast, get very coloured, and stay up for a day or so, then drop quickly.
However the sea trout will run in the lowest of conditions, but as you have seen the weir at knowes is a formidable barrier in low water.
The fish will come in, and go out, on each and every tide until river rises, spring high tide will reach ford downstream of weir, thus the logic of fishing tynninghame section at any time of day or night immediately after tide has turned to go out at this time of year.
There will be a good number of sea trout in this section at high tide.

Thanks Bert

Will try and coordinate my next sortie with the turn in Tide. Will keep you posted on results. Amazing that the seatrout will run up a river that's as low as that!

Just seen this thread. I fished quite a bit last season...ran past my office .

I mainly focussed on the tidal stretches down at Tynigham. Even when water is low there seems to be fish coming in on the tide. Saw one very good seatrout swim right past my legs upstream from there but all the fish I caught were finnock.

From end of May till late August loads of sea trout come in on every tide, in my day average was 3lbs, my biggest was 9lbs caught on worm at linn pool east linton when in spate. had 14 that day!! Biggest on fly was 6lbs, caught at haddington golf course couple of hundred yards below cascades weir.
However I Have seen over two hundred sea trout lifted by estate nets at tynninghame on one pull through the old iron bridge pool!!.
Glad they dont net anymore, but the local poachers still do.
By the way, where was the office!?
