I'd see if I could buy those flies back first Simon.

If you're fishing a water for the first time it's important to recce the water first in the daylight. Make a mental note of water depth, obstacles, width of the river etc. I take it if you've had an invite you'll be guided, which should take some of the guess work out of it.

As for tactics, well try and work a pool down methodically. Enter the pool and start casting straight across the river for the first couple of casts, then slowly change your angle until you're casting slightly downstream, letting the flies work around with little or no retrieve. Then cast and step (this not only ensures you work the pool methodically, it's also the polite way to fish a pool, allowing any waiting anglers to enter the water above you once you've moved downstream).

Lines will be determined by water depth and speed. Ideally you don't want the flies to skate (unless you're working the pool with a surface lure) and of course you don't want to be snagging the bottom either. Obviously pool depths alter greatly as you move downstream, so you need to find a 'compromise' line to start off with, maybe switching to a faster sink rate after the witching hour to work the deeper areas, you should have a floater, sink tip, slow glass and possibly a DI3 with you.

Sea trout aren't really wary of leader material, so a good strength leader is vital (when they take, they really hit the fly hard sometimes). I generally use Maxima chameleon 10lb for all my sea trout fishing.

Flies, well hopefully your host will put you on the right road there, and once again the type of pool will determine your fly to a certain degree, but as a rough guide I always fish with a small, light tube (alu or plastic) on the point with a 8 or 6 single on the dropper.

Be warned, it is an enchanting form of fishing, you may find it difficult to turn your back on it after your invite expires.

Hope this helps.

I've still plenty of flies left Thanks for the advice.I just wondered about fly patterns so I could get prepared and get some tied up or bought.

Thanks Again
