Default Welsh Sea Trout

Hi all. I am off to Wales in September for a fishing holiday, my main quarry will be brown trout and grayling, however.... Assuming the river is unsuitable for fly fishing for trout, does anybody have any advice on what lure/spinner tactics for sea trout and salmon I should try if the conditions allow?

Sorry I should have stated that. I am staying in south Wales, and am prepared to drive upto a hour from Neath area to a river. River choice has not yet been decided.

You'd be getting towards the end of the sea trout season but the salmon should be starting to show in numbers given some water. The Neath itself is a decent river and just a little further west are the Towy and Teifi which are two of the best.

There is a huge choice of fishing within an hour of Neath.

Sewinbashers phrase "given some water" is the crux - the local rivers (Neath, Afan, Ogmore, Tawe) are short, steep and respond very rapidly to rainfall - low, and gin clear they are a dry fly challenge, peak flood you can do nothing with - but the short window (2 to 6 hours) after a spate can be very productive and great sport.

The tidal part of the Neath has Bass and some enormous Mullet - these are nearly impossible to catch.

Further off, but still within the hour, are the Usk and the Wye - longer rivers and slower to respond to rain.

What kind of spinner or lure should I be taking to the bank if the conditions are right, flying "c" (single blade or double), mepps, devon ,minnow, rapala, etc for catching sea trout and salmon hopefully. What breaking strain line would you advise?

Thank you for any help you can give me.

Default Welsh Sea Trout

Try 1. Anglia Long Mepps No 2 Or 3 - Silver/Gold/Copper

2. Irish Minnow 1 3/4" up to 3"

3. Flying C Red with Copper blade/ Black with Silver Blade
Yellow with Silver Blade( in very dark water)

4. Rapala Fire Tiger / Silver / Brown Trout

As used on the River Towy
Drop me a line if you want

Good Luck

I would agree with the above. You can't go far wrong with a 7cm or 9cm black and silver countdown rapala in IMO, salmon and seatout love them. The bright orange ones are also great in high coloured water. Good Luck - rain is crucial!
