Some nice trout there, good vids. What do you use for the video, some sort of night vision I presume?

There are a couple of decent sea trout rivers near me, River Roe and River Dennet, I'd LOVE to try the night fishing but don't have the confidence to try it. I fish at night in the sea and even with a head torch I find it hard work, and that's just chucking a bait and lead into the tide! Don't know how I could even attempt pitch black fly fishing.

Any tips for a total rookie? Do you use a torch at all?

i use a night vision camera to record .. as you can see in one of the vids i keep on missing where i put my rod down its so dark when trying to pick it up again

1.the main thing about seatrout fishing at night is dont let your mind take over... as you will scare the bejasus out of yourself....

2. practice makes perfect ...

3. i only use a torch when i am not near the river ..

4. i spot my seatrout in the day around noon when the sun is at its highest

5. need a fly that will not catch the bottom... right weight.. but will fish close to the bottom ... also right sink tip for the pool of choice for the evening

6. in small streams .. upstream in a pool is best.. fish hook themselves -- also you controle how deep you fish by stripping faster means shallower

7. always get to your pool before it gets pitch black ... make life easy on yourself ... also you claim the pool in case anyone else wants it...

8. learn to tie a fly on with your eyes closed or you will have to get out of the river and go into the field to tie another on...

9. always drag your rod behind you through trees etc ..

10. practice makes perfect.... again and again...

the best fly i use is a body of silver blue hackle and teal back none of the dressing goes past the hook barb as if it does seatrout will nip the end of your hook but won’t take far enough up the hook to get hooked

A true Gent. Tried that kind of antics on the rivers here in Wales and you'd find yourself climbing out of the river next pool down.

What kind of antics are you referring to that would have someone climbing out of the river next pool down ... sounds like they need to read hugh falkus seatrout book ... with all the man wrestling and bathing together ye guys would have no fish

the pools i fish are only 30 feet long so if someone is on the pool already there is no point in joining them .. as they may have even messed it up for the night... so when i go i make sure i know of 3 or 4 pools that have fish in them ... but always go to the best one first... and everyone else would not jump on your pool either... as no one would get fish then... sure most people that seatrout fish would be to scared to fish where i go ... it messes with your head...

one of the times a few years ago the sheep were being slaughtered by dogs... dead sheep in the field .... i was standing in the pool and the pack of dogs were up on the high bank stalking me... for 3 hours... i hiked down the river and out the other side in a deep pool where they could not cross...

I got in my car drove another 8 miles upstream to another pool and an hour later the dogs were there again... the sheep were all pulled out of the fields cus of the killings so little old me was on the menu as there was nothing else for them

and it is only catch and release now... on fish over 1lb sure there is no point in keeping any then.... so i have not killed a seatrout in 4 years .... all the fish i get on that river usualy range from 1.75 - 5lb

if people dont look at the river in the day and fish it in the evening you never find the nets... and the river gets raped....

good point dryfly and duly noticed im afraid it might be different where you fish. see your point on fishing smaller rivers and streams im afraid we have to share our pools with others although we do have to book on so the pools are not overcrowded i often walk miles out of the way to fish alone luckily the dark dosent scare me i just close my eyes lol ,, good luck for the comming season and keep us posted long may the anglers of the dark be brave

how did i insult you or did i just show you that you were mistaken in presuming things................... man up.... if you did not comment on things you dont have the knowledge of i would not have corrected you.. you cant teach old dogs new tricks unless they are willing to learn .... i think there is vintage fishing at vintagefishing.com
