Default Sea Trout Novice

Evening everyone. I've just been awarded a membership on the River Dyfi and I've never targeted sea trout during the night so aim to change that this year and need some advice on where to start.

My thinking would be to start with a Di3, short leader, black and silver tube fly with something like a size 6 butcher on a dropper about 4 foot away. Cast out to the far bank, count down to 5 feet and short sharp retrieve.

Am I anywhere close??

Sea Trout don't really enter the Dyfi System until the middle of May so I've got plenty of time to do my research and tie up some flies.

I'd also like to know if it's worth having a go during the day? I guess small traditional wet flies such as Black Pennel, Zulu, butcher etc would work if fished through the runs at the tail end of the pools??

All advice greatly received.

Hi Fishing Junkie.

First and most important bit of advice when taking up night time sea trout fishing, recce the water as much as you can, check where you can wade/walk safely, then check again.

As for set up, your flies and leader setup look ok, not sure about the Di3 though, for my river (the Conwy) it would be a little heavy unless I'm fishing a really deep hole. A sink tip would be the line of choice.

Again for me when starting fishing a pool down, I start by casting directly across the river, letting the current pull the flies around, then I'll end up casting across and down with a 'cast and step' to cover the pool effectively.
A slow figure of eight to move the flies nice and slowly.

Hope this helps.

Get old Falkus's book, you won't go far wrong with that.

Interesting..... why is it that the UK is the only place that insist you must fish only at night to catch good or (any)sea-trout?!! Im sorry but I find it Bizaar... Ive caught highly sucessfully in both day and night situations both here and in Tierra del Fuego, some very nice ST on the Test, Itchen all in broad shiny shiny daylight with very small flies, exactly same tactic in TDF

The guy above gives very very good advice! and Ive never fished a welsh river for ST but ST are ST all over, they are all searun browns and behaviour (I have found) is very similar.

In TDF they gorge themselves on kelp of all things and thus turn into absolute monsters, some well in excess of 30lb !

In any case the advice;
By all means try this, just go one or two days and try and have a go for them during the day! Use flys such as

Prince Nymph, Creeping Stonefly (Black)
Girdle Bug,
***** Creek (Orange/Black Montana on steroids)
G/h Mayfly nymph with legs
Yuk Bug
Wonder Bug

any Small flies with rubber legs (great)

Just humour me, and try a day with nymphs and goldhead stoneflys
I almost guarantee you will catch good seatrout (almost)

Night (traditional full english )
I have three must have flies

Super thin Collie Dog Black/brown Ali Tube
Sunray Black super long Ali tube
Snake / Elver Black on plastictube

They love the profile of afly at night
in TDF we fished long black flys almost up to midnight,
Huge hits and great fun so i assume they watch the profile against the night sky

Anyway goodluck! and please dont be afraid to try a day session
it just a tactic change, nothing more.. tight lines!!!!!
