Default SewinCaster Lines

I have recently purchased a mint Hardy Gem MK1 10' #8. I intend to use this for mainly single handed salmon fishing with occasional forays for sea trout. After much deliberating I decided to use the SewinCaster range of lines on the rod. However after a little bit of research I found out that the lines originally marketed by Illtyd Griffiths were taken over by Wellard and Scott. As most of you are aware they ceased trading and the lines have been picked up by Airflo. Simple question: with the, at times somewhat negative remarks towards Airflo lines, are they still as good/worth buying?

I've not tried the sewincasters but the sixth senses are good lines. I think Airflo are very hit and miss - I've had some really good stuff and some really bad stuff. Nothing in between...

Illtyd is a member of a couple of the seatrout forums maybe you can still get some off him if you track him down...

Hi Spruce,

The lines were always made by airlo. Illtyd spent a lot of time and effort into the line and made sure it was exactly to his specifications even down to how the line would react memory wise to figure of eighting. It casts and fishes perfectly turning over standard flies and heavier tubes with ease. It is pretty good for bass too!

I have been using the lines for a couple of years and can honestly say they are top drawer and memory free.

He is in Argentina at the mo on his way to chasing some sea trout in Patagonia but I am sure you can contact him through his website.

Hope this helps

Pete

Thanks for the reply but I am still unsure. Don't think I can get him for a while as I am sure he is hosting a trip to Rio Gallegos, Argentina for the sea trout around now. Maybe some other forum member has first hand knowledge of the SewinCaster range by Airflo? Posted this BEFORE the second reply so looks like they will be o.k. Funny they are more than a tenner cheaper than when first launched though?!

Default discontinued = cheap

I am surprised they are not cheaper, discontined stock or stock where the original company has failed can often be found to between 25% to 50% cheaper, its the way modern retailing goes I will also bet you a tenner that Airflo are making more money now by selling direct so again its only right that the 2010 cost is less.

So if one is to believe all the praise when the lines were first launched, it would appear that they are a good buy!

sewincaster lines have allways been made by the same company, all to the exact same demanding requierments of illtyd.i was lucky enough to be around at the conception of theses lines therefore i had one of the original prototypes to use, the weld is much better in the later model, they are superb sewin lines i believe to this day that they are still the only line made purley for the seatrouter , that in its self is an honour , wellard and scott were sold them but so did others . im sure illtyd will have a few lying around if you strugle to find one ps they are only made in one weight 7 weight worth remembering if you have a 8 weight rod
