Default Can you fish for sea trout from the shore

As title say,s "can you"
I'm over on Arran off the west coast and just bought a permit for the coming season , i dropped into the conversation that i planned to fly fish from the shore for sea trout near to the river mouths ! Due to rules with ayrshire angling he thinks that this illegal ?? is this true ?

Any input welcome

most of the river association waters proceed beyond the opening of the river mouth so you would be breaking the law if you don't have a permit, also it is illegal to fish for any migratory fish without a license so i would make sure i was covered by a permit etc!!!!

You need to identify the defined rivermouth. This can extend beyond the estuary in most cases. You will also require the national licence.

As far as Im aware yes you can,if you have the permit to do so.Most river fisheries control some of the estuary. If its just general shore fishing Im not sure. But I have seen a program where they walked the shore and shallows fly fishing for sea trout. There may be local rules but sound like someone doesnt want the fish hooked before they enter the river.

Why not just fish for say... Cod or Pollack or flounder or something, and if you happen to hook a sea trout then great... So long as you don't intend to kill your catch that is...

I don't think you would need a permit for flyfishing for Pollack near an estuary or do you???

Presumably, you can't fish on a Sunday either?

It has always been a contensious issue up here on the Clyde.
My mate caught a sea trout of about 5lb from the pier at Craigendoran on lug with a beach caster.
He was approached by a Loch Lomond Angling Club member and was told in no uncertain term that he was breaking the law and he sent for the cops. My mate decided retreat was the best course and ****** off before the cops came.
I have caught quite a few small sea trout fron Rhu narrows on fly and never been bothered.
I was lead to believe the LLAIA permit covers down to Erskine Bridge or there abouts?????
Well up tide of the Helensburgh area. To me this is not the eastuary but the open sea.
Does anyone have concrete info on this?

This any good

Section 1 of the 1951 Act (as amended by the Salmon Act 1986) states:

"1. If any person without legal right, or without written permission from a person having such right, fishes for or takes salmon in any waters including any part of the sea within one mile of mean low water springs, he shall be guilty of an offence ......"
