Depends if you are a) Night fishing, b) Day fishing in low water, c) Day fishing in high water.

For a) Teal, blue and silver, Silver stoat, muddlers, Black and silver tube, snake fly, waddington, surface lure

For b) Tricky, depends on the rivers you fish, but drab nymphs and dries on fine leaders and light tackle

For c) Similar flies to high water salmon, combinations of orange, yellow black and gold in tubes etc.

All Sea Troot rivers have their favourite patterns, the most famous on the Nith was the Brown Turkey, i cant remember the name but the border Esk also has the same.
Some work on other waters, some not, the Surface Lure, never did anything for me on the Nith, back in the days when the Nith had good runs.

I am going to give you your most important piece of advice for seatrout that you will ever be told.

I wasn't told and found out by myself now every seatrout angler I speak to agrees with me on this evryone on here will tell you the same.

Use at least 8/10lb Maxima throw the flourocarbon away when going for seatrout I lost my first due to 8lb flouro snapping on me. :-(

Copoly might be OK if you use a tucked blood knot but I'll stick to Maxima.

I use the normal Maxima the green one not the horrid Chameleon stuff I have used that in lighter breaking strains and didn't like it.

I agree with the above wholeheartedly. I use Maxima Chameleon for all my sea trout fishing.

As for flies, again as John says, try not to worry about specific patterns and colours. Getting the fly in front of the fish and having confidence in what you are doing is far more important than specific fly choice. Try and resist the urge to chop and change flies because you're not getting an offer. Stick at it with a favourite fly and the chance will come.

For what it's worth, this is my fly of choice, for no other reason than it instills confidence.

I used the 3lb chameleon 10 years ago and found it snapped very easy when knotting it.

But maybe it has changed either way just use Maxima.

Fly wise I like flashy flies like the one up there or a fly with a bit of movement about it.
