Default How you get your Mepps down deep

Sorry to talk about hurling metal on a fly forum but last season I struggled on a few lies to get the mepps down deep fast enough. I have used a mepps on the point with a lead weight on a weak link dropper to get it down quick. Anyone else have any tips for getting a mepps down deep? down to 6 or 8 feet in a fast deep weir pool...

buy a deep running version with a different blade angle like a vibrax super deep runner.

The mepps with the willow leaf shaped blade tends to fish deeper but my tip would be to cast upstream, let it sink and fish it back down.

I detest uptrace leads!
I regularly fish at that sort of depth by casting upstream (the only direction to cast when sea trout spinning) and pushing the rod point deep into the water. With the rod point 6 feet down you can fish the lure fast without pulling it up towards the surface. Of course not all pools suit this method but where you can use it nothing is simpler.

I know you are talking about fishing mepps but a trick i have seen on the Tay with tobies is pretty good.

If you remove the split rings from two tobies you can put the tobies back to back and join them together by putting the split rings back on.

The tobie has doubled in weight but not in size.

I hope that makes sense.

You mean an aglia yes they get down when they have time to work, however in one pool the fish are 5ft down against the far bank, a weir wall . The added lead approach seems to be the only way to get a lure down fast enough , Wondered if anyone had a rig to suit...

Well if you can find a way of fishing it well without getting on the far bank I'd like to know about it! Get as far downstream as possible and the current acting on the line will help to keep the lure close to the wall for longer. This is one thing that nylon, being thicker, is better for than braid.

As for a rig I don't think you can do much better that drilled bullets on a doubled wire (paper clip) threaded through the top eye of the swivel. Keep adding weight until you snag the bottom!

Another little trick is to lob the spinner quite a bit higher on the cast as a more vertical trajectory when it hits the water sends it down quicker. JB

For the deeper and fast water I was using Aglia Long with special Mepps heads in different weights.Heads like on the Mepps Lusox.

I make my own heavy weight mepps, flying C style. The only difference is I use tungsten coneheads or bottle tubes for the body, and don't add a rubber body,

Cheers
