In simple terms use the same gear and flies as you would for stockie rainbows and cast down and across. The best fishing will be at night and this will give you a whole new dimension to your fishing.

Good flies are Medicine, Sweeny Todd, Alexandra, Stoats Tail and anything black and silver. Tie them sparse and slim, hairwings are best and plastic tubes are also good. With fresh fish you can use a pretty big fly, 2" tube or No.6 l/shank singles are not too big, but as the water level drops and clears you need to drop the size a little.

Takes are usually positive but occasionally you get tail nippers or very soft takes. If all else fails pull a muddler across the surface making a v-wake and you might get the shock of your life!

Some will say floating line and there's nothing wrong with that but I prefer to use a slow intermediate as there's no wake and if the pool is deep I'll change to a slow sinker. A floater with various Polyleaders will work OK though.

Sea trout can be very spooky so you need to wade quietly and drop your flies without too much fuss and it is better to sacrifice a little distance for neat presentation.

A couple more tips, 1) check out the pool(s) in the daylight to see access points and any deep holes or rocks, 2) measure a cast to the far bank and mark the line, you'll lose all sense of distance at night, 3) don't shine a bright light on the water, use a red light as this is OK and won't spoil your night vision. Finally 4) it might be better to use a single fly to start with but don't go to more than two as tangles will really mess your night up. It's a good idea to make the dropper a few sizes smaller than your point fly as this might give a clue as to what size is best on the night.

Enjoy! Most who have tried it would think it is the best fly fishing.

Hi Bigtroot. One more piece of advice in addition to everything else that has been said in the previous posts is not to venture out night fishing alone when you make your first attempt or two, this is just from a safety point of view.
If something goes wrong ie a fall causing injury it is better to have back up.

Also always let someone know where you are going and what time you expect to be back.

Once you get into it, night fishing is addictive and thoroughly enjoyable.

i never really done much sea trout fishing at night when i fished for them although most people would say it's the best time to go after them,i fished my local river for sea trout during the day armed with either my 9ft 4 or 5wt rod & my boxes for river brownies,i caught heaps of cracking sea trout on small size 14 & 16 tungsten beaded nymphs ie ptn's & hares ears etcanother great wee fly i used on the dropper was a little holographic spider pattern that used to do very well for me to.tippet material was stroft abr in different breaking strains for certain river conditions & dont forget the dry fly as sea trout will come up for them also,i remeber fishing the duo with a klinkhammer as my indicator & a small size 16 flashback ptn with a copper tungsten bead on it,i was fishing away & having already had a few wee finnock & a couple of brownies my klink dipped under & i lifted into a fresh sea liced 3lber on my 9ft 4wt after an eppic scrap & a picture the fish was released, ten minutes later the klink dipped away again & this time a 31/2lber fresh from the tide took the ptn another superb scrap & a pic then released again,i went on that day to take another fish around 2lbs & a few more finnock & a heap of brownies, the best thing about it was that the sun was splitting the sky & it was roasting hot not the ideal condititons for fishing in general but for sea trout fishing especially,so my advice to you would be dont disregard the wee flies as they accounted for 90 per cent o my sea trout during the day,my best fish was a sea trout of 51/2lbs & a 7lbs grilse both taken on my holographic spiderso just a little food for thought for you sea trout enthusiasts, atb craig.
