Default fishing in the salt for seatrout.....

Hi all,

I have recently got very fired up watching youtube videos of our Danish cousins fly fishing in the sea for seatrout. I am going to tie some shrimp flies and give it a go from the beach. I know seatrout are caught from this beach on spinners and I have caught bass from the same beach on the fly myself, so I think it is worth a go. But......I am not sure which times of year I should expect to encounter the sewin. There seem to be seatrout movements all year round. Does anyone know when they run around the south east?

Thanks so much for your help in advance. I will keep this thread updated with any results.

tight lines,

Guy

Sorry Mate,
I only could tell you where and when they are around in the Baltic Sea....
But a Shrimp Pattern mostly pay dividends...I fish it year-round and that is up to 50 times

Where in the SE exactly do you want to try.

If you fish the estuaries of Adur, Arun, Ouse, Rother etc or very near them with shrimp patterns you are more likely to catch bass but the STs are there now but out of season as spawning is around this time as I am sure you know already.

I have tried the Adur at Shoreham under the wooden bridge several times but only had bass there although have seen STs. They say they hang around the estuaries for long periods, look through the thread I started for more comments by local ST enthusiasts.

Given the very low numbers and the very large sea I would have thought trying for STs off the beach would be like trying to win the lottery but each to his own.

In all my years fishing for sea trout in the sea, I never caught a fish with a shrimp in it. Lots of other crustaceans, mainly sea slaters, but never a shrimp or a prawn although there were plenty around. Strange but true.

Why? I am looking to fish in the sea which bailiffs would be looking to "knock"? I would really appreciate your advice on this, I am always open to learning more.

Thanks Hibbs,

Southampton is a bit far, but I could maybe put in a weekend trip / session, stay down in the area, makes it more worth while. :-)
I understand I would need a migratory licence to fish the rivers, but which licence would I need in the sea? As far as I am aware no such "sea" licence exists? Your advice would be greatly appreciated,

Best regards,

Guy

That's really interesting info, because lots of the european chaps seem to be using a large amount of prawn flies. I bow to your experience though, would you recommend more sandeel patterns? Thanks so much for your reply

Thanks for the reply Brighton Trader,
I will not set out for the sewin until after the spawn. Thanks for raising that good point. I look forward to reading your thread.

in regards to the big sea and low number of seatrout......I can but try my friend

Gettrout. migratory fish are covered by seasons, this includes wherever they may be caught. That's perhaps why the bailiff might come knocking. You may also find that you need permission to fish for them. Just because they're in salt water doesn't make them fair game.

Hi GuyFromLaw,
Thanks for taking the time to reply. I will not set out for them until the season opens I assure you, I have learned that from the helpful chaps on this forum like yourself.

Could you help me on the permission you mentioned? whom should I seek permission to fish for them from? if you have any examples of situation where people have to have some kind of permission, that would really help.

Surely a licence that applies to rivers, cannot apply to the sea?

Thanks so much again for the reply and I very much appreciate any help or advice you might give in advance.

Guy

It might have been a regional thing, but, like everyone I knew fishing in the salt I had no confidence in shrimp patterns. I use Zonker style flies which imitated sandeels.

In orkney & shetland udal law alows anyone to fish below the high water mark for sea trout. Locally, in the Tay estuary, you have to seek permission from those that hold netting rights to the area you wish to fish.
