Default Sea trout smolt marine servival rate?

Does any one no the answer to this question?
Have read a lot on salmon smolt servival being currently around 5% but have failed to find a report on sea trout. Some one ,in chat, did tell me that the servival rate of 'fin clipped' hatchery sea trout smolt on the river Dovey was around 4%. Just wondering mainly because their marine migratory pattern is so different.

In Summer 2009, the accepted survival rate of all smolts at sea (provided to me by EAW)was some 10%.

Of the returning 10% of fish to the Towy, EAW advised that a further 10% of these were taken by estuarial and coracle nets.

Of those that consequently made it upstream, EAW estimates in 2009 were that some 20% were caught by anglers.

I believe there to be some heroic assumptions underlying these conversion factors but they will give you some assistance is assessing impact. The EA also had numbers for incremental salmon and sewin per new Km of water cleared or improved, along with a value to the local economy per salmon and sewin. This should allow you to do some sums and reach a rudimentary assessment of a return on the investment. Although far from accurate it will probably be better than nothing - might even indicate a no-brainer!.

In time the CSTP will shed light; still interesting: http://www.celticseatrout.com/docs/a...atejan2011.doc

I haven't seen much confirmed in writing but 0 SW schoolies or shoalies show poor sea survival rates; worse than 1 SW proper sewin. Indicating that post smolting loss in the first few weeks or months are highest. The run of larger mature sea trout will survive several spawnings if effective C&R regs are in place. Must be the way to go.
