Default Fly line issue

Hi
Now the season has finished and i have evaluated it. I have a question to ask?
Having fished often with a friend on the river who would out fish me everytime! Not that is a problem as he is generally regarded as a good angler on our club water. The question is that he would fish with a slow sink intermediate and i would fish with a sink tip. I can only recall one night where i had more fish. Is ths simply down to better angler knowing the water better than Me or because he was using the intermediate line etc. I know there are many other factors to take into consideration but we generally fished with similar flies etc.
Many thanks
Gareth

Slow sink v intermediate and fishing at night.... If so could be simply because he chooses a better swim? No idea mate, a bit more info would be handy.

I know it's a long way off till you get back on the river but have you considered using the same line as him? The slight difference in depth achieved may well be the reason.

There are dozens of variables in fly fishing which if right add up to success. Skill is one of them.If a person is more skilled than another his success rate will be higher. If the skilled person can identify a better swim he has an immediate advantage.
I would have copied his methodology as closely as possible, line leader length, and flies. Finally, depth and retrieve are vital for success. I have watched two similar anglers fishing using everything the same in the same spot from a boat. One caught fish the other didn't. It was all down to a different retrieve.

Thanks guys
I should of added, we generally fish same set up other than fly lines. Same flies and length of leaders etc. We will usually follow each other through swims and pools taking it in turns who goes first to balance it out. I have usually caught more than him following him so maybe then my set-up suited best for that time. I understand that knowledge and experience is power. Probably only one way to resolve this and purchase a slow sink intermediate line and experiment next season????

No matter what advice you are offered, you will not satisfy your curiosity until you fish the other line.

You could find that by using the int line rather than the sink tip keeps you more in touch with your flys and ultimately you feel the slightest of bites from the fish... I was fishing a comp using a gost tip for a couple of hours and took a couple of fish from about 5 ft of water and only hooked them by chance. Changed over to an slow int and started to feel the smallest of bites which I'm sure I was getting all day but failed to feel with my previous line. I've found the try the airflow ints very sensitive line...

I have a good friend who guides in South Wales, his go to line for Sea trout is the Cortland blue intermediate, I started using one up North and my catch rate improved....

It keeps you in touch with the flies better and there is no kink in the line when sinking as there would be with a sink tip, so better hook ups and you feel more bites
