Default Sea Trout on the Itchen / Woodmill Pool

Hi Everyone,

After many years chasing brown and rainbow trout I have been giving some thought having a try for Sea Trout.

My nearest water would be the River Itchen / Woodmill Pool. Can anyone advise me when Sea Trout put in an appearance.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks
Graham

You're possibly a little late for the Sea Trout this year, as the season closes on 31st October. It starts again next year in early April.

They generally 'run' twice a year, once in the Summer, and again starting around October when they are moving into the rivers to spawn. Exact timings of runs are determined by a number of different environmental and genetic factors specific to individual river populations, but usually require a good dump of rain!

I haven't personally fished the Itchen - but many on this forum have, I am sure they will give you some details.

Save yourself £100 and fish the tidal water below Woodmill Pool. Park up in the car park on the left just after you have crossed the Itchen, cross the road into the park and fish all the down. I think this stretch of water is nice as you can study the lies when the tide is out and then fish the rising tide when the fish are running.

You pick up some nice sea bass there too!

I like the shallow run dropping into the deep hole next to the boat house just as the tide creeps into as the bass are often right on the front of the flood.
