Default Red Vent Syndrome

Last weekend I hooked a 3lb seatrout on the fly in my local loch. Upon landing it, I found that it had what looked liked Red Vent. The fish was released as 3lb seatrout up here are like hens teeth, rare. It's been reported to our fisheries trust. Sorry, no photo's, as camera left at home!
Have any other anglers had a similar experience, as I've checked the internet and it only appears to affect salmon.
Look forward to any comments........

could be just about to spawn or may be a kelt, the sea trout tend to spawn earlier than salmon

Thanks for that....our seatrout, in our system, usually spawn in early Jan. I usually keep an eye out for them, as they don't hang about it our small burns, Straight in & out!

I don't know much about it, but the grilse we caught on South Uist, end of August this year, certainly looked like they were suffering from it - like they had had a phal and 10 pints of Guinness the night before!

The trout down here in NZ sometimes have an inflamed red vent, but it is nothing to worry about, they have just been feeding on Snails and/or Crayfish and they have to pass the shells once the meat is digested! Now that has got to hurt!
I am guessing that in the U.K. red vent is caused by sea lice?
All the best.
Mike

"The swollen vent condition soon gained the popular name of "Red Vent Syndrome" (RVS).
RVS was recorded predominantly in adult, male and female one sea-winter fish, although a small number of two sea-winter salmon and sea trout (S. trutta) were also affected. No farmed salmon were reported with RVS."

Hi Mike/

When the brown trout here go on a snail-eating bender it certainly does not nice things to their digestive tract - very much like you say. Gives them a right dose of the Gary Glitters!

Hi Cap'n Fishy, Do they eat Crayfish as well? I once caught a rainbow in lake Taupo that had 4 good size crays in its gut! Sometimes the fish in Lake Aniwhenua are so stuffed full of snails you can feel them in the guts and when you pick the fish up you can hear a gravely crunching noise.
All the best.

Hi Mike/ By various factors, our trout don't often end up with crayfish in them. (Crayfish a sensitive issue in the UK these days )

Snails are another matter, however. As you say, you know when you have got one of them by the 'walking on gravel' noise/feel as you unhook them.

Cheers,

Col
