Default Sewin or small Grilse

Hi all,

Had a great time down in Wales on the Teifi earlier this week and managed 3 migratory fish to the bank plus a few wild browns.

I was so sure I had caught my first sea trout and obviously was chuffed to bits but the more I look at them and the Teifi trout website (where it shows the differences for the uninitiated like myself), the more they look like very small salmon.

They were both about 1.5lbs, but the lack of spots below the lateral line and jaw extension makes me think very small grilse. They were both caught on a mepps #2, certainly put up a good fight, were quickly snapped and returned safely back to where they came from.

Any thoughts and help please?

I wish, but unfortunately just the name I use on forums, and have done so for over 10 years, but nothing to do with fishing I'm afraid.

Thanks for the replies both, very pleased with the result.

A.

thanks all for the replies! Shame they couldn't be on the fly but the pool where we wer staying was too high banked for a single hander and i don't have a switch rod, plus my casting is bad enough without trying to spey cast.

Do they tend to gain more spots below the lateral line as they grow older as all the pictures I have seen show that?

Yes, the longer they're in the river the darker they become and the 'spotting' and general colouration becomes ever more brownie like - entirely different from when they're fresh run with a few 'asterisk' spots and scales that rub of like the scales from a butterfly wing.
